I honestly am so arrogant that I think my bass tone is the best ever. Have a listen to this which is a recording of my old band re-recording our songs in April. There are mistakes etc but just listen to that tone!!

I like it Tom... It's almost as good as mine... :)

I'll get my coat :)

I can't see how generate beginning & end youtube tags so it will have to be a link.

Something like these -

Balcro.

Edit. Oooh, what happened, they're there anyway.

That is a good tone mate :) There are two aren't there? I like the tone in the staccato math bits a lot!

There are a few sounds on that one, yeh. The phaser just after the intro bit is on bass, and there's a quiet bit near the end where i'm tapping with delay and whammy. Just the general sound of it though - I went from years of humbuckers to a jazz pup configuration with the bridge solo'd and it's the best move I ever made.

Just a few of my favourite bass sounds...

I know I know!.........but I've always loved the sound..........this You Tube clip doesn't do the sound justice though.

Love it! John Wetton - one of my bass heroes!

Muzz my friend. You are spot on. The song that inspired my bass career and led to international fame and stardom......

The very last bit is slightly untrue.

If we're going down the JJ Burnel route then this just shades it for me;

How about this for a bit of single coil growl ...

That's the very thing. Very pleased to say that my Fender Power Jazz Bass Special sounds 'exactly' like this - unsurprising, I suppose, as McKagan used one. But did he use one for this - anyone know?

This is similar - Black Country by Black Country Communion

For my overall favourite bass tone, you just can't beat Geddy Lee's Wal sound. It's incredible. Hold Your Fire is probably my favourite record of all time, but the bass sound on Power Windows is just a little bit more aggressive and 'in your face'. It's absolutely sublime.

Beat me to it! I'll go with another favourite tone of mine - Norman Watt-Roy on his P-bass:

I've generally liked geds sound in its various incarnations. It doent hurt of course that hes a bl**dy genius player, really the playing during the guitar "solo" is stunning (thats often when hes at his best).

This is a bit of vintage ged tone ...

Again check out the playing in guitar solo section (about 3 mins in)

First time that I can remember I heard Jimmy Lea playing his John Birch custom EB3 with onboard overdrive thru a massive Hiwatt rig. Blackburn Cavendish Club (RIP) October 1978.
I HAD to have one!
ffwd to 2:32 if you can't be arsed with a rip-roaring cover of "Somethin Else", this one from Reading 1980.

It would be rude not to mention Mr King here. Classic Status tone in this recording...not to mention some incredible playing!
