First time that I can remember I heard Jimmy Lea playing his John Birch custom EB3 with onboard overdrive thru a massive Hiwatt rig. Blackburn Cavendish Club (RIP) October 1978.
I HAD to have one!
ffwd to 2:32 if you can't be arsed with a rip-roaring cover of "Somethin Else", this one from Reading 1980.

For my overall favourite bass tone, you just can't beat Geddy Lee's Wal sound. It's incredible. Hold Your Fire is probably my favourite record of all time, but the bass sound on Power Windows is just a little bit more aggressive and 'in your face'. It's absolutely sublime.

+1 for Geddy's WAL sound.
Aggresive and sharp at same time.

He's not a bad player either. :)

Yeah thats pretty evil (n a good way). whats the setup ?
[/quote]

A load of pedals. The important bits: A totally clean DI'd track with everything above 200Hz cut off. The rest is coming off my pedalboard which is an LS-2 blending some compression and sometimes ODB-3 with an Ibanez SS10 (weird old dirt pedal) which I drive varying amounts. there's more going on but I think the key to it is blending a compressor with an absolutely horrible distortion pedal. If you used the SS10 on it's own for bass you'd feel ill, and not in a good way.

Those are my personal favourites, those would both suit my band so well. Too bad i don't have a passive Jazz, SVT, P Deluxe, Ashdown ABM500, Ampeg SVT-410HLF, or any of the other crap that those guys have.

Love it! John Wetton - one of my bass heroes!

Listening to this yesterday. the album's got awesome groove on the upbeat tracks. Remember being addicted to it even at 14!
For me, this isn't the type of Jamerson sound I'd normally for but it's just infectious.

What compressor do you recommend, Tom? Are there any tips to blending the two? I'll admit, the compressor is the one thing I'm really missing - and a few people have mentioned it now, so could be time to learn from it.

I'm deffinitely the wrong guy to ask. I use an Ibanez sound tank guitar compressor which is horribly noisey. I only use it for loud sections. Other than that I have a Boss LMB3 at the end of my chain to reign in peaks and give me more headroom.

For me, this next track is the holy grail of overdriven bass tone. It's played by the legendary Tony Butler. I love the fact that the bass sounds so powerful and grindy, yet so articulate and even. The bass tone is only complimented by the bright, sharp guitar sounds. The playing is absolutely sublime too. Check out the tone and playing from 01:48 to 02:30. Absolutely incredible. If I ever chase an overdriven tone, I'd be quite happy to end up sounding like Tony!

This next track also has some amazing bass tone. Check out picky growl at 01:26 and 02:56 for the amazing chorused sound. If you're a fan of tight playing you'll love the lock up between the drums and the bass at 02:56. It's absolutely outrageous. I often play my ACG with a pick going for those big Tony Butler sounds.

I honestly am so arrogant that I think my bass tone is the best ever. Have a listen to this which is a recording of my old band re-recording our songs in April. There are mistakes etc but just listen to that tone!!

Tony was running two enormous Trace stacks when he was in reheasal with BC in the late 90's at Stainbridge Farm Studios, a brite box on top of a big 410 on top of a 118 all twice over. Two heads running them (both eq'ed the same. It was a monumental rig, and absolutely gut wrenchingly loud.

The most obvious part of his tone that I hear in those clips, other than a bright attack (pick?) is the two anf a half tonnes of deep chorus he's using. Totally in keeping with the era mind!

Cheers! I love John Stockman's tone too. Have you seen them live? The tone is even more impressive, real ball-jangling stuff.
