New track just added to the Basschat group on SoundCloud:

http://soundcloud.com/skollob/squeeze

... no 'real' bass involved, but a shedload of the synthetic variety! Some of you might like it; many will likely loathe it :)

God only knows what I was thinking with this one. It's basically a bunch of half-baked ideas all mashed together with some odd YouTube samples thrown in. Mixed on headphones late at night, so "watch yer bass bins" as the saying goes - as the low frequencies may well be fierce. Or not. I have no real way of telling.

Avoid if you're a fan of laid-back blues and folk. Give it a whirl if you like drum'n'bass, dubstep and odd electronic stuff.

Really enjoyed that, liked the use of the Dr Who bit in particular.

^ Glad you like it! And bonus points for spotting the Doctor Who sample... I'm a huge fan of the original theme tune and it seemed to fit, so I slung it into the mix for good measure :)

A few days ago, i just had this track licensed through a Library company i use, for a Sony PSP mini game.
As a back ground looped instrumental [Release Jan 2012]
This was at a Buy out price, and quite a good payer.
Someone listened to the track on Soundcloud then contacted me for possible Licensing.
Then my Library company did the rest.
So it seems Soundcloud could have good benefits after all... :)

^ Brilliant!! Well done Gary, that's great news mate :)

Nice track too. Good work.

Just been demoing Reason 6 rewired into Studio One V2.
Pretty cool man, i see why you like Reason, some great stuff in there.
Looks like i might have to bite the bullet with R6, some great sounds in there.
Studio One is totally Gap-less, so you can jump between the two for editing, without stopping the sequencer, and with no glitching or Audio drop outs.

^ Ha ha, once bitten and all that... :)

Yeah I personally love Reason, as you know. R6 is well worth a look - it's now much better suited to working with audio, and I'd say it's worth it for the replica SSL mixer alone. And it's damn stable too; I've yet to have it crash on me.

Anyway, let me know if you decide to take the plunge. The Propellerhead site is full of great tutorials and the community there is pretty helpful too.

Have fun! And well done again on getting that track licensed.

Not in the least bit "bass-centric" but something else I enjoy doing on my own...

Enjoy!

Guest Jecklin

I'm involved with some theatrical stuff later this year and a composition of mine will be used in the proceedings.
Putting a demo of it on soundlcoud today for the writers to work to I remembered this thread so I joined the group.

May not be to the tastes of many here, but if you are into relatively quiet, understated music with lots of sustained tones and gentle dissonances this may appeal.
It's a demo, the final version is for double bass where most is bowed, so the bass guitar here gives a relatively different feel especially as there are a lot of harmonics which have a "floating" effect when bowed but not plucked on bass guitar, but you'll get the idea:

^ Hehe, that's great! Looks like a nice little game too... kinda like 'Stick Death' meets 'Defender'.

Well done getting your track on this :)

Summat I did to try and get a high Indian tabla sound. Played with thumb hits on the G string high up the neck. I'm playing drums on this too. The only thing I recorded with them before I flogged them to Happy Jack.

Wanted to say that i tried to upload a track to Soundcloud. It was an .mp3 that i had ripped from YouTube - so not great quality.

I then EQd the original bass out as much as possible and played a bass track alongside using CUBASE

Did a quick mix - exported as an .mp3 and tried to upload to Soundcloud.

The upload completed and then there was a scary message, something like, "Soundcloud has detected that this track has copyright" - etc the upshot being that i couldn't upload it.

This isn't a whinge as i understand why artists want to copyright stuff - but this is a 30 year old disco track that wasn't very popular when it was released. I have managed to upload (more popular) tracks in the past.

Is this something new?

^ Not sure to be honest. I've never tried uploading anything but my own stuff to Soundcloud, so I haven't encountered this warning myself.

I guess it must use some kind of recognition software (akin to SoundHound and others), or maybe the ripped mp3 had some sort of identifier encoded in it.

There's probably some nefarious way around uploading copyrighted tracks, but a man of my standing certainly wouldn't want to recommend any such behaviour... ;)

PS: there's a constant stream of great music in this thread; keep 'em coming folks!

What you have done in theory [and you are not alone by any means]
Is trying to Sync someone else's [published?] Music to your own new project/content etc.
[that's the way Soundcloud digital ID will see it anyway]
You would have to get 'A Master Use' license from the record company or Music owner[s]

On another note Monetization through Youtube is becoming quite a good source of revenue,
now that the various performing rights organisations have struck up deals and are collecting from Youtube.
So yes its getting tougher to do what you want,
although Soundcloud/Youtubes digital ID system is still pretty flawed at the moment.
