Pinball Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Hi there, for infomation I updated the tracks and added another after getting some other feedback. I'm much happier wiht them now. More feedback always welcome. http://soundcloud.com/mole-music-1 Cheers Quote
musophilr Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Checkout Girl. You've added more balls to the guitar sounds, nice. FWIW I'd try this: put the drums up as high as you dare. then add bass till it sounds like a balanced rhythm section. then add guitars. then vocals, and if you can't get the vocals high enough to hear properly, try: guitars that happen at the same time as vox - pan them to the sides away from the vox (which should be central), also scoop their EQ at 3kHz by -3dB and hump the vox at 3kHz by +3dB. IMO rhythm guitars don't need to be high in the mix at all. I know they sound big when you first put them in but that temptation has to be resisted. Quote
rOB Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 (edited)
John is interesting - the kind of riff you might hear in a folk club with the occasional added b5 to justify the alt-rock tag Heard the others as well. Take my comments with a pinch of salt because this isn't my genre and the chances are it's meant to be this way (remember the BBC engineer who apologised to "Mr Hendrix" for not being able to get rid of the distortion and feedback?). FWIW I'd start by bringing the drums up as far as you can, then fade up the other channels until you can hear both them AND the drums. As you've got a lot of bass stuff going on (distorted an' all) its going to be tricky to make that appear as the "lead" instrument without splatting everything else, but try to resist turning the wick up on the bass EQ on the bass tracks. Try the 800Hz - 2kHz band instead at +3dB on the bass track. You might get more definition in the bass dept without splatting the tracks the contain more treble content. Vocals can stick out more if you boost the 2.5kHz - 4kHz band, and scoop out the same band in other tracks like rhythm guitar. Anyway thanks for the entertainment (John especially) and I hope you enjoy more playing & mixing ...
Thanks so much for the advice. Much appreciated. I'll have a look into those mixing tips. Edited March 28, 2012 by rOB Quote
Been a bit busy with a covers gig recently ( Every time I play with this band I tell myself it's going to be the last time) but should have some time at some point over the long weekend. A new song is almost ready to be recorded, so will do some work and let you know. Quote
urb Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 A little loop I created this morning with no bass and some OK-ish drums - in a DJ Shadow-ish stylee - sorry it's so short: http://soundcloud.com/munkio/easter-loopage Quote

http://soundcloud.com/mole-music-1
You do come up with some good grooves, don't you. The newer ones sound a bit brighter in terms of the treble content, and when comparing them with older recordings I think it's an improvement. Do you record your vocals in a place where you feel inhibited about giving it some stick, or are you a "I can't shout it hurts my throat" kind of vocalist? Sometimes I think the rockiness of the groove requests a more raucous vocal line. I'm in no position to criticise (you've heard some of the crap I've put on soundcloud!) I just wondered if more raucous vocal would complement the rocky groove? Quote
Pinball Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Thanks M8, I'm enjoying myself and experimenting with styles and I'm still working on getting a broad spectrum of my stuff on line. I would re-record the first few if I had time but I have more to do. I'm starting work on something with no lead guitars and synthed voice but I may well get bored before O finish as I like the feel of holding real guitars. Re raucous vocals, Hmm I dunno about that as I never tried, other than on the track burning ghosts at your suggestion. I wasn't happy with the "screamer" version but the one up there is more aggressive and better than the original so thanks for that advice. To be honest I don't think I could be a screamer. It just wouldn't suit my voice. Maybe if I get an angry enough song that needs it ?? RE: Treble content, I think your right. It allows for more contrasts in the songs. Quote

TimothyClapson Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Not gonna lie, I my soundcloud is used mainly for my producing work but I have recently joined a new band so a lot more of my bass work should be going up soon. http://soundcloud.com/tim-clapson Quote
Linus27 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Well, I finally got round to sorting out a soundcloud account. So far I have uploaded two albums I have played on. More will follow in time The first is the last album I played on for a band called Cow and recorded in 2012 at Paul Wellers Black Barn studios. I guess its a kind of acoustic, motown, soul, pop thing with a 60's and 70's american feel. For me the stand out tracks are Shivers, Gypsy Lover and Far Enough (fretless). http://soundcloud.com/michael-boylan/sets/cow-dedicated-to-the-mighty/ The second album is a band called Inter which is from 2000 and is guitar punk pop. It was recorded at Loco Studios in South Wales and produced by Mark Walis who produced The Wildhearts, U2, It Bites, The Smiths and many many more. Stand out tracks for me are Happy Ending (John Peel's favourite song of 1997), Swallow, Radio Finland and Real Horrowshow which along with Swallow are my favourites. http://soundcloud.com/michael-boylan/sets/inter-got-my-nine/ Anyway, enjoy and feel free to download as much as you like Quote

charic Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 I've started to do a little project on the side, more atmospheric than my "normal" stuff. Where I'm primarily playing keyboard. What makes this particularly adventurous is that at the end of each day I work on a song it uploads to soundcloud almost automatically. So anyone watching will get to see the songs develop.
