thepurpleblob Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Something like that.... I seem to be playing more stuff again that could use the range of a 5 string but I don't really like playing 5s. I *can* do it but I don't get on with the narrower string spacing too well. I like all the MusicMan stuff - I particularly like the Bongo at the moment. What will give me similar tones, in a five string with 4 string-esque spacing? Any offers? I had an Overwater for a while which had a lovely neck but (for me) sounded pants... way too high-fi (also looked a bit twee... the only colour is black really!!). I do own a Stingray-5 and it's OK but, again, the spacing is a touch tight and the G-string is insanely close to the edge of the board. Quote
chrismuzz Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 A Fender Deluxe Precision 5. It's got that humbucker at the bridge which is capable of J AND Ray tones Quote
thepurpleblob Posted October 5, 2011 Author Posted October 5, 2011 Oooh... that MTD is nice. I haven't seen one of those before. It's expensive, isn't it? What's the string spacing on those Fender 5s? I've seen them about but never played one. Quote

Fender 5's are usually 18mm spacing. Quote

Pete Academy Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I had this dilemma years ago. I was after a used Stingray 5 but couldn't find one. I bought a Warwick FNA Jazzman because it had a big MM-style pickup. Nothing like. IMO, nothing else sounds like a Stingray. Quote
Yes - the underlying answer may be, does anybody want to swap a Stingray-5 for a Bongo-5 Quote
errr well i just missread your entire post. sorry, never mind. i though you were after a 4 string that was like a 5 string stingray (which i think is why they developed the sterling) anyway.... Doctor J Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Lakland 55-02 has 19mm spacing, like you I can't really get on with narrow spacing. Give the Lakland a shot. Quote

Cosmo Valdemar Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 String a 4 as BEAD? Works if you don't mind sacrificing the G from time to time. Quote

zzaass Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Don't know what the outcome was, but there was discussion on ernie ball forum about making some special orders with wider spacing http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-basses/50235-openening-order-day-19-music-man-string-spacing.html Quote
Delberthot Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Our survey says: X X X I was going to mention the Ibanez ATK basses as the obvious ones but they're 17mm spacing Quote
charic Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Dingwall super j iirc was quite similar. I preferred it tbh Quote

The outcome was a war between the EBMM fanbois and anybody else who would dare ask anything... of course, then some EBMM haters would add some spice to the pot, and you get a big bunch of nothing at all. It ended up as an exercise to set up a thread to say "see? nobody wants really a 19mm Stingray". Quote
