FlatEric Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 As some BCer's may be aware, I have spoken about my Magnum on several occasions but as the famous quote on here goes "No pics - It doesn't exist!! Well, I finally got round to taking some decent shots, at the time I was doing a string change. So, here it is!! Lots more Pics and a detailed description here: http://flatericbassa...agnum-bass.html Any questions, Happy to answer. ahpook Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 very nice ! what's the curved part that comes out of the top of the bridge ? a finger rest ? a bottle opener ? Quote
allighatt0r Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011
very nice ! what's the curved part that comes out of the top of the bridge ? a finger rest ? a bottle opener ?
IIRC it's the control for the string mute system Quote

RhysP Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 That's lovely! Always fancied one of these but they're starting to get pretty pricey now. Quote
Shaggy Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Cracking example of a fab classic bass. Mine is the fretless model of yours and must be similar age as it has the black finish p/up frame rather than polished - I'll update my porn thread soon rather than hijack yours! A few pics of some Magnum bassists though - the legend that is Barry Adamson (ex-Magazine, Bad Seeds, solo), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Jah Wobble, Ross Vallory (Journey - sorry about tiny pics!), bassist with ELO Quote
EdwardHimself Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Well it's certainly not a fender P-bass. I'll give you that. Quote

Clarky Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 It really shouldn't work, but it does! Love it Quote

simon1964 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I don't know why I like these, but for some reason I do - lovely bass! Quote

C
Kind words Chris, but untrue (or rather; yes I know MY basses but nothing about any others......) Can almost say for certain you won't find a fretless, but ebony boards were used across the range - so a defret is an option - and they crop up quite regularly on t'bay. 2 at the moment ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1972-ovation-bass-S-N-B-00041-very-rare-collectors-dream-/270829963752?pt=Guitar&hash=item3f0eb949e8 - which I'm pretty damn sure ain't a '72, don't think these came out until '77 - and the active Magnum 2 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ovation-Magnum-II-1262-Bass-wOHSC-Near-Mint-All-Stock-w-Active-EQ-Not-Reissue-/300608290804?pt=Guitar&hash=item45fda67ff4 ) Anyway, you know you want to keep that c64 and if you sell it you'll buy another one... Immo Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011
a thing of beauty
Hey, that's my text! Quote
Big_Stu Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Saw a band with one in an Irish bar in Edinburgh years ago. It was seismic!!! How big a difference is there between the two pickup outputs? Looking at them you'd assume it was night & day. Quote

If you click on the link to my blog, on the original post, you will see a detail about the pick-ups. I also have covered the Stereo feature. The pick-up looks big at the neck, but is in fact, four small coils. The back pick-up is very sharp and in some circumstances could be described as a little harsh on it's own but blend the two and it's a different story. Some very useable tones. Cheers. Quote
stoker Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I'm pretty sure I've seen Colin 'Wally' Lowe, original bassist with Magnum (the band) playing a Magnum (bass). Quote
daz Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I like it. They look singular and sound immense. Now all I need is to find a Dutch geezer to nick one from. Quote
Blartfactor10 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Nice Bass it looks in mint nick. The Guy out of Journey used one. you can hear it on the hit's "Who's Cryin" and Don't stop beliving. Mine has had a Warwick circuit fitted in place of the old Graphic style circuit. the Metalwork was stripped and polished. I'm not using it much just now so i may consider letting it go!!! I Could do with a decent Rig for my upright and I cant help lovin Musicman's!! Quote
Oldman Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 Well gast my flabber, I part chopped a Magnum 2 (Graphic model) for my Warwick Thumb in 1990 (in Aberdeen) found out a couple of years later that only three came into the Country. Here's another killer, I swapped a Fender Precision and a Fender Telecaster for the Ovation (straight swap) in 1978...........Dont say a word............... Quote
BigRedX Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 I lusted after the green one every time it came up on eBay but never had the funds to buy it... Quote
Likewise!!! Seems a damn shame to paint such a lovely slab of mahogany, but the solid colour really sets off the lines of the body, and makes the bass look more like the Deacon / Breadwinner guitars that inspired it. The p/guard (carbon fibre?) looks ace too Quote
