I'm going to be receiving my first ever neck thru bass in a couple of weeks.

I'm thinking that I might like to refinish it, but I'm a little nervous. I've stripped and repainted a few precisions and jazzes, all bolt on of course, but never a NT.

Any advice on what to do differently or if I should perhaps just leave it alone?!

Does it need it?
And what sort of finish is it?
The main difference I can see is if it's painted all over you will need to cover it all in one go front and back which can be tricky to get a good finish on all planes without making a mess unless your technique is good other than that go for your life :)

No different in principle to a BO bass - I did one a few years ago; put a bit of dowel through the top tuner hole and suspended it by that from the garage ceiling so the entire bass could be sprayed in one go for each coat. That was using satin poly, but if you're using nitro I'd probably spray it with the bass flat (horizontal) doing front and back separately, nitro being so runny.
Another tip; if you're using sellotape rather than proper masking tape; give the fingerboard a very light smearing of vaseline and wipe off before putting the tape on - stops the glue from the tape getting left on the board when it's removed.

Be brave, and good luck!

What kind of bass is she, and if you've not got her yet why would you find a re-fin necessary? I've done one P bass body, and currently doing another. Just teaching myself as I go along. The only thing I can think of, is the neck doesn't come off, so you have to do the whole guitar and mask off the fretboard. Also you would lose any decal on the head. Plus when the strings come off loosen off the truss rod to compensate for the loss of tension across the neck.

See what you think when you get her, as it's very time consuming. I'm sure there's loads of guys with plenty of experience doing thru-necks.. I'm sure they'll be along shortly! Good luck!

It's a Spector NS-2A. It looks awesome, except it's sunburst which I've never been a massive fan of. Look nice but I'd prefer it black.

I want to refinish the whole thing except the headstock front and fingerboard

The thing with advise is it's free, and you can take it or leave it. But, this is mine. I'd leave well alone, this is a seriously nice and pricey bass. If you f**ck it up you might regret it, and could loose out big time if wanting to sell her on. Me, personally I like sunburst, but horses for courses. I'm assuming the current livery is from Spector, so it will be top-notch, and you would be hard pressed to match the quality. Why not sell her on and try to get a black one?

If you really want her black, give this lot a call http://www.simscustom.com/html/home.htm . Will cost you, but it will be first class.
