I see where your coming from but I think thinking (poor English there) logically about your common used patterns in a theoretical sense could be so advantageous in terms of new ideas so I don't think that's really a problem. More of a challenge. And the more of them the better!

There are other exercises for developing your imagination. And what's wrong with discipline? I would think a lazy and unimaginative musician wouldn't be doing this in the first place.

I tried this last night, it was interesting how I just jabber on the bass sometimes and can't repeat what I did, once i started thinking more about my phrasing, it became easy to repeat. I think it's a clever exercise.
