What about the brass/ceramic/steel ones that've never been near a bottle that I wasn't drinking out of then, eh? EH? Riddle me that...

They are bottlenecks but they were never bottle necks.

I would often say machine heads, that's what they were always known as at one time.

The thing is,so do I,out of habit.I was told thats what they were called when I first started out.But it's just me.i just tend to question everything.I refer to them as tuners now,it's quicker :)

When my daughter was little , she used to turn my Stingray over , point at the neck plate , and call it a doggie bone .

I've no idea why . She's 9 now , and still remembers it . Even she can't fathom it out .

They may have been bottle-necks. But some are certainly made from the necks of bottles. Beer bottles are good. Tie a bit of string round the base of the neck. Set fire to it. Allow to cool. Knock gently and away it comes. It's an old hobo trick I learned when I was riding the rods in '31.

even though it's (I suppose) a legitimate contraction of 'plectrum', anyone using the word 'plek' for one p!sses me off.

I call them picks - is that better or worse :)

That will be PLEK.
Most people spell it plectrum rather than plektrum, hence plec.
I haven't opened the link, is it rude? :)

"Did you start playing the bass because it's easier to learn than a guitar?"
"What's the difference between a guitar and a bass guitar then?"

Knobs.

Yes, plectrum is Latin, plektron is Greek. But PLEK is something else.

It bugs me when people ask me to play some 'funky bass bit' in the middle of a song that just isn't funky.

I suppose using 'funky' as an adjective to describe any prominent bassline hacks me off.
