northstreet Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 My originals band are thinking of recording some decent demo tracks. I said I'd ask the wise souls on Basschat if they could recommend somewhere suitable. We're a 5 piece (2x guitar, bass, drums, vocals) playing indie-ish rock, all based around the Wood Green/Enfield area of North London. Aiming to record maybe 3 tracks. Budget would cover probably 2 days recording plus mastering. This would be the first time in the studio for most, so we're looking for somewhere who wouldn't get phased by some complete novices. So good, friendly, reasonably priced and based in North London. Not much to ask for, really! But seriously, any recommendations would be appreciated. Quote
If i'm honest London isn't the cheapest place to record - someone prove me wrong! I can however recommend a place called the Ranch which is near Southampton (a mere hour drive away if you bomb it down the M3). http://www.ranchprod....uk/fr_home.cfm The engineers there are excellent - I recommend Neil or Steven. It's an very good place to start - they're used to dealing with all sorts of bands with varying levels of recording experience. They do now have overnight facilities should you need to sleep there. edit: we made our first album with them, see what you think of these tracks... WHUFC BASS Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Pat Collier at Perryvale Studios is a superb engineer. Not cheap though. Around £300 a day but well worth it. For you area, there's one in Barnet which a mates band have used previously and the results are excellent. I'll need to find out the name of the studio though. Quote
Rimskidog Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Fish Factory is well worth a look if you want to stay in London. Quote

Down my way - Bromley - £300 pd including engineer was the going rate for a studio which was cosy but big enough for us, with the same lineup as you. I can post a link to the results if you like. Quote
that budget is a half day without engineer or pro tools at AIR, in studio 1. Lyndhurst hall is more. I would look at: http://www.bigbluemusic.biz/Site/Welcome.html Steve Ancliffe runs it, I did some sessions with him the other day and he was superb. Another option would be the church in crouch end, it's owned by David Gray but you can get it on a day rate. I'd go for 2 days and get a good engineer, I worked there with Kevan Gallagher who was equally good. Most importantly, be prepared... will save you time and money. Know absolutely definitive versions of what you want to record. It takes half a day to get properly up and running then it's be ready ready ready. If you want some contacts then give me a PM I know lots of these guys from working in various studios and if I don't know them myself I will know somebody that does. You can sometimes get downtime at a decent rate. but be prepared to jump if the studio is not booked or cancel if they get a full rate booking... Edited December 11, 2011 by jakesbass Quote
