Nibody
Well, I bit the bullet and decided after 20 years of playing that I'd get a bass that matched my lost love (a 76 Precision that had been pro-refinished in a sort of Purple/blue burst). I luckily have a mate who helps his cousin out with custom builds (website is http://www.wezvenabl....uk/Basses.html if anyones interested!) who has offered to fit the bridge and neck for me so I dont mess it up!!. I've got myself a MightyMite body http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1439.l2649 via ebay ordered, pre-finished in Blue burst with a quilted Maple veneer - I just fell in love with it. My 76 had been finished a more purple blue colour, similair to the Cadburys dairy milk wrapper colour. The choices I have now are Asthetic - Maple or Rosewood Fingerboard (I'm leaning towards Maple, like my old 76 - think Rosewood wouldnt look right) Next choice is Pickguard colours - tied between Standard Black Gloss, Matt Black, Black Anodised or Chrome/mirrored (still have my Phil Lynott/Steve Harris hangups!!!) Then Black or Chrome Hardware - I'm leaning towards Matt Black P/G with Black hardware (hardtail bridge and tuners/string button) Pickup wise I'll probably go for Seymour Duncans passive (not a fan of battery changes!!). Like a sound somewhere between John Paul Jones and Phil Lynott (never get it though.. lol) Any opinions on which way you would go with hardware/pickguard, and pickup suggestions? Update** due to being messed about by an idiot on Ebay now cancelled. Edited October 18, 2011 by Nibody
Andyjr1515
Hi, Nibody Sorry to hear of your bad experience - we've all had them from time to time, but thankfully they are the exception rather than the rule. Have a peep at my website ajrguitarmods.co.uk - I would be happy to discuss if you want a particular look and sound to see if I can be of any help. I'm almost certain I could get a cadbury's purple and blue sunburst look. I do it more as a hobby than a business so it might not be anywhere as expensive as you might think...all but the body finishing would be at cost only. PM me if you are interested and no probs if you aren't Andy
Kelso
You sound so passionate about your build. Don't give up just because of some baw jaws on ebay! Keep on going mate and good luck, sounds like it's going to be a cool bass . . .
gary mac
Yes, stick with it. Have a breather and come back to it when your mood improves. I felt the same last weekend, when I had probs with a p bass body purchased for a build. I sulked for a few days and deleted all the items in my watch list on e bay. But will start looking again soon.
discreet
+1 on not giving up! Plenty of alternatives about! My 2p: White 3-ply pickguard, 70s-type chrome hardware, Seymour Duncan SPB-1. Black thumb rest in post-74 position, on the bass side. MM Maple neck with pre-76 type-'C' logo. Sweet!
Nibody
Thanks guys.. Whent for attempt 2, picked up a rough-ish looking blue sunburst body, but when it arrived it had two massive cracks along with the chips that I already knew about!!! Seemed like they had put it on Two bricks and jumped on it!!! I'm guessing they tried (rather heavy handedly) to chisel the neck pocket a bit and screwed up. Thinking about that one as I have some spare bits from attempt 3 (see below!) so it may get patched up... Bought a Hodson Pro Bass (White Pbass copy with a solid Alder body) as I just wanted a Precision again. Then came the Wizzard Trad Pbass pickups (which are gorgeous sounding). Then I gave in and ordered a Maple/Maple P bass neck.. and a black pickguard.. and tuners.. and a "Fecker Pretender Bass" logo mod from Fleabay. End plan is to get a gold anodised pickguard on it and go for the 50's re-issue look (like the guy from "Rise Against" plays) Andy thanks for the offer, I may at some point pick up a plain unfinished body and get it Purply bluebursted as I have a severe case of gAS at the moment. Will tap you up if I do for a quote.
