Nope - think I'll pass on this.

I am, however, curious as to why someone has taken a chisel to the upper bout ...

Just stick to your Rob Allen porn, Jack! Speaking of which, there is a Mouse on ebay.com (I highlighted in another link, might accept an off-market offer?)

Edit: just saw your comment about rodents not being your thing

I think calling it a '70 is on the optimistic side. My '71's serial number is a couple of thousand lower.

Very nice if it is what it is, though - the rosewood they were using around that time is beautiful.

SN looks correct to me for a '70. It could even be a late '69 with those tuners, be interesting to see what the neck date is. The only thing i can see as an obvious change is the pickup height adjustment screws.
Its one of those basses that just looks like it's gonna sound the dog's bollox, fretless aint my thing, otherwise it would be tempting. Nice buy for someone though at that price.

This bass is now on its way to me :)

The guys took it apart for me and photographed every single part of it they could use to reassure me of its authenticity (neck stamp, neck pocket, pickups, pots etc.). As already noted, the pickup adjustment screws are not original, and I assume the pots were replaced at some point many years ago with some square jobs made by Bourn, so I will be looking to correct that over time, but I figured a first production year fretless was too good to turn down...

Oh, and the neck stamp is December 1970.

As you had discussions with them re authenticity, what's with the lollypop tuners out of interest?

Well, it's hard to know for sure, but it seems the bass is a bit of a transition model, as the neck stamp is the old style one that was being phased out at the time. A lot of stuff on the 'net suggests Fender were using up old stock at this time (not unusal to see 66 pots in 70-71 basses for example), so perhaps the same applies to the tuners.
