Where the hell rock's gone?

Well, I may be misunderstood for this, but I'll try at least..

So, it's about half-a-year I'm on this chat - reading topics, laughing at Ped( everything's cool, mate ;) ), watching sorta porn, so on.. And it's really nice to be 'surrounded' by so many people, that are sensible about basses and stuff, but, the thing I kinda feel this area is lack of a bit is...

When I think of Basschat, I simply know that people love Fender's, a words called groove and jazz, Jamerson and so much other thingies, but..

Aren't we interested in what John Myung is doing, what's Dood doing ( we have our own rocky-chaps here, don't we? :) ), what about Rob Trujillo's using, how's new Meshuggah's album ( IMO Nothing is their best work so far..), do you know Dysrhythmia and sooooo on...

Generaly, I'm interested in that 'complex' side of rock/metal music, and those persons/bands musicially, technically, visualy, even psychologically represent it for me..

I mean, I like music of any genre, one day I listen to some Les Claypool tunes, the other to Jay Kay's voice, the third to some crazy Meshuggah rhythmic patterns.. There's so much good music out there, but don't you, folks, want to ROCK?

I hope at least few understood my flimflams.. ;)

Cheers, chaps, waitin' for you thoughts,
F8

Well, personally I think obZen's very good too, but yeah, can't beat Nothing...
Is this a very subtle "GOD I HATE JAZZ!!!" thread? :) I like metal and jazz, but metal is music to listen to whilst jazz is music to talk about!
The thing about bass and metal is that typically, if a bassist does anything other than play root notes or just copying the rhythm guitar, it's seen as not metal, or at least incorporating other styles, so when we talk about fretless bass players, we're including Steve DiGiorgio and Chapman sticks and ERBs are gonna relate to John Myung or whatever but nobody's really interested in what Dick Lövgren plays because it's exactly the same as the guitar... right?

For me it's complicated... I have a particular vision of what I want Rock Bass to be, influenced by my history of listening to Progressive music. It's not really compatible with most of what's going on today, I feel.

Geddy Lee has been a big influence in the past, but to me his Fender + SansAmp sound of the last decade doesn't stand out the way his previous bass sounds did - my fave being the "light" Wal on Presto, and the Steinberger on Grace Under Pressure. Even when he used the same Fender Jazz before, it still sounded unique - like no-one else. I've enjoyed previous Muse albums, with Chris getting some great sounds out of his Pedulla, but he's also partly retreated to Fender. Though he's kept the fuzz boxes and has a Rickenbacker too.

I suppose the main problem I have with Fenders and copies is a kind of elitism on my part: everyone's doing it, basses being cranked out like McDonalds Cheeseburgers, and I'm not hearing the variety in sound that I used to. I know Fenders can sound interesting if the player works at it, but I have to say that nearly all the bass sounds I've liked in the past were not Fender sounds. From McCartney through Entwistle & Squire, Mick Karn, John Taylor, Tony Butler & Pino, Tony Levin or Jim Glennie, through to Cliff Burton, John Myung, Fieldy & Chris Wolstenholme. I want to hear that bass stamp its authority on the song, so I can hear the player clearly as a full member of the band, not just part of the "rhythm section". :)

So you reckon it's endemic as opposed to solely a basschat thing? I have to agree about Chris Wolstenholme especially - the bass on the latest album is totally uninspiring... still, not all Fender sounds are dull thuds - what about Jaco? He was never just part of the rhythm section :) Then again, he wasn't a rock bassist...

I think one of the most excellent rock bassists recently is the guy from the Kaiser Chiefs, almost all of his basslines are far more complex than they first seem. Sometime soon i'm gonna spend some time and work out one of the albums.

Although i'm not sure the Kaiser Chiefs are what you mean by rock.

Hey, I'm all about the rock! Sure in the past I've dabbled in everything from garage-punk to metalcore but it all comes back to rock. Tomorrow night I'll be playing in front of about 2000 bikers who love the rock. It's never gone away, there are just a lot of varieties of it at the moment. Fender Ps generally sound dull and the music of Mr Pastorius bores me rigid. There i said it.

a fantastic rock bassist that plays today is Jared Followill from Kings of Leon, he is my biggest inspiration on the bass the way he incorporates licks with punchy root is awsome!...Honestly if you have listened to kings of leon before do it now, listen to Razz off the second album aha shake heartbreak, or joes head from their 1st youth and young manhood, or near enough any track off their new album because of the times.

I hope to be bringing BassChat some truly awesome news soon ;o) Bare with me!

- On the subject though.. Yes I realise that the stuff I am into and love playing is a bit more niche than the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs (ref above). I certainly miss hearing about players who are pushing the envelope a bit.. and I don't necessarily mean being the fastest and having the most strings. I get quite excited about seeing well executed and totally mind boggling playing! The guys from my band have me laughing out loud with their craziness!
I used to think I loved 'rock' music, but when I was between bands a couple of years back, I came to the conclusion it was a meaningless word. It didn't take long before I stopped answering ads from bands looking for a bassist for a 'rock' band. To some people 'rock' means 'Iron Maiden', to others it means 'U2' and 'Travis'.
Yep I agree it's like the term Jazz, Rock is just as huge a genre.

Not just yet ma man! ;o) We are in the midst of writing material at the moment. We have a few demos, but we keep improving bits, so they are never quite ready!

Oh, man, I've just realised I've forgotten to mention a word Progressive. In this way, the main thing is, I'm interested in Prog music.

You know, Dlloyd, I've used to listen to all those 'rock bands ( and, truly, listening sometimes now :) ), but when I 'entered' that area of prog-rock/metal music... When I looked to for eg. Mr. Myung or Dood at what they're doin', how they're jerkin' that bass and realised how Much you can do with that thing.. I can proudly say, that this is IT, man, what keeps me inspiring on listening and playing that 'prog-rock-bass'!

You know, ObZen's complex thing, Nothing's too, but, what I feel about their newest material... Despite the fact they are 'back' to their roots ( I mean 4/4), due to the fact they're very serious about what they're doing, sometimes people 'over-do' things, you know.. I mean, there is some great complex stuff out there in Meshuggah's and other bands' lists, but, for me, ObZen is umm.. Waaaay out of the way, i would say... ;)
To compare with other genres, it's like listening to some crazy jazzy stuff, but it's not just about 'not understanding where's the beginning and where's the ending', it's more about listening and 'getting' the effect like 'playing one song through Winamp, and the other through Youtube at the same time... ;) And what do you get there, eh?

But it's not really about thread 'Hatting jazz', mate ;) I don't have much against it.

I can't dig why chaps think that the bass is covering rhythm guitar.. Take a Look from a different angle :D When I play with rhythm-git player, it is he, who covers me

Don't be quelled by those gu*tarists, folks ;)
