Len_derby
Isn't it the often the supply and demand laws in action? For reasons set out above, fewer people play the drums. As a result, it appears to be possible to hold down a place in a band with a lower level of ability than it would be for bass. In the land of the blind the one-eyed man in king.
Don't be ridiculous. That's the same old crap as saying "basses should only be 4 strings" or "guitars should all be tuned to standard". As I said before I'm sure your drummer's configuration works perfectly well for what you're doing in your band but that doesn't mean it works everywhere. Certainly for the songs I do i find myself playing all my drums and cymbals and one point or another, they shouldn't be played all the time but even if you only hit it once then it serves a purpose and it's better to have it there and only need it once then need it and not have it at all. Gilby
Caught an interesting programme on radio 4 presented by Stuart Copeland last year about drummers and they spoke about their fitness. There's is/or has been some serious research being done with Clem Burke (?) from Blondie. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7518888.stm (haven't got my head around links using iPhone, just google "drummer fitness study" and it should be at the top). JTUK
It is a decent point, admittedly. We have to regulate the type of work we do ..as in doubling up on dates..as the drummers just can't physically do it anymore. Suits me..we only do 2 hrs max... uncle psychosis
I'm lucky enough to have played with some great drummers. One of my old band mates is currently playing with Tim Minchin---he's also played with the likes of the Streets, Massive Attack, Newton Faulkner...to say that I'm jealous would be an understatement! The drummer in my current band is also great (not that I'd ever tell him that!!). It makes such a big difference having someone good behind the kit. Perfect candidate. A frenetic, "round the kit, whoops, there goes the beat" sticksman if ever there was. Sacked by The Ramones after 3 dates for being "too sloppy", IIRC. The shame. cheddatom
On the Primus DVD I have there's a great drum solo I play drums for a couple of bands. When it's reggae/hip hop sort of stuff, it's quite easy to be honest. I push myself to keep it interesting, but some would say I over play. I really don't care 'cos the band seems to like what I do! Playing fairly heavy rock is a totally different experience, and I can play about an hour at the most before I keel over. The more we practise the longer I can go, but it's still the most excercise i've ever done in my life!! Playing bass gives me occasional wrist pains but generally I could play all day long with no problem no matter what style of music. I've played gigs without a full kit though. Kick snare and a cymbal will do for me, but I like to have everything there.
I agree that drum solos at gigs can be a bit of a waste of time, just like a bass solo would be having said that, I do think a lot of bands tend to add random crap into their sets to fill into the gaps, good as thing as any to have I would have thought? I'm aware that at age 20 I might not have the same experience of music as many on here. I don't think that invalidates my opinion though, I can only tell you things from my experience. For example when it was 10°C in my room still having to take my sweater off when I'd finished playing a song on the drums because that's how hot i'd gotten.
