dc2009
The Chinese government sell about 58% of the world's rare earth that is mined and exported each year? o.O
arthurhenry
Interesting that while the Yanks say "Aloo-min-um" and we say "Aluminium", they say "Nee-oh-die-nee-um" whilst we say "Nee-odd-mee-um".

Mr. Foxen
The longer term plan here might be drive up prices, the west responds by building their own processing infrastructure (which is the missing bit, where China has the monopoly), lots of investment there, then China can use their stockpile to crash the market, ruining the investment, and really messing with things. But also, check this out, the west totally pulls the same stuff, on itself: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43931226/ns/business-us_business/t/goldmans-new-money-machine-warehouses/#.Tp9ZrXLwAY5

[/quote] I say Nee-oh-die-mee-um, I think just because that's what seems logical when I read it. Anyone in this thread ever come across Nyquist plots? I had an interesting lesson in the pronunciation of that the other day. (I came across it analysing various mass idealisations for vibrations on an aircraft frame, but it's apparantly useful in Physics too). Companies are already paying twice as much to dispose of old technology as it cost in the first place.

The only Neodymium in my house is in itsy-bitsy headphones and hard drives. None in pick-ups, and my cabinets are soooo old they probably use moving magnet drivers...
