Hutton
Does anyone know why Fender have stopped fitting schaller straplocks to their basses?
chris_b
So they don't have to pay Schaller for them.
Hutton
So they don't have to pay Schaller for them.
They had to pay Schaller for the locks when they did fit them so I think there must be more to it than this unless it is simple economics. It's a pest having a couple of straps fitted with the locks but then having a bass that has to have to locks retro fitted. OK, it's not a big deal but I just wondered if anybody knew why they had stopped fitting the locks.
EssentialTension
I've never had a Fender that came with straplocks fitted. Which models had those?
Subbeh
My deluxe jazz came with a set and theyre still listed on the site as part of the included kit.
Hutton
I'm pretty sure that they have been fitted on MIA instruments since the 80s right up to the American Series stuff. They seem to have stopped with the latest American Standard instruments.
bigsmokebass
I didn't know fender put strap locks on thier basses. How long ago was this or what series?
EssentialTension
I've had several MIA Fenders since the 1980s and never had a factory fitted straplock on any of them.
Hutton
I've had several MIA Fenders since the 1980s and never had a factory fitted straplock on any of them.
I also have had several brand new Fenders especially American Series guitars. They all had schaller straplock buttons fitted with the strap part included in the case. They were marketed as Fender although they were made by schaller and exactly the same as the schaller version. If you look at the current Fender website the deluxe versions have schaller straplock buttons fitted as Subbeh points out. Highway One guitars/basses/reissues/special editions didn't seem have the locks. They were however fitted to the standard series basses. My 1984 precision has them factory fitted. eddiehoffmann
I think only the American Deluxe series had/has them fitted. I bought an American Deluxe P- Bass in 2001 that came with the Schaller strap locks.

EssentialTension
A bassist friend of mine - who, anyway, wouldn't know a straplock if it hit him in the face - has a from new 2004 American Deluxe P5 with no straplocks.

At least no one had a bass like that from new! Edit for dodgy predictive text on "smart" phone. bigsmokebass
Taken from the current Fender US Deluxe Jazz specs: ____________________________________________ Accessories Case Gig Bags: Molded rectangular SKB® case Included Accessories: Cable, Strap, Strap Locks Strap Locks: Schaller® Strap Lock System ____________________________________________ so, it seems like they still do, but they always say that they can change any specs, any time and who's to say the shops have no input on this? I know once when I've looked into buying Fenders, Instore, they have tried to sell me the gig bag! Lol, not saying its all stores but this was in my home town of Liverpool
4 Strings
1997 American Jazz Deluxe, no straplocks. Would have been nice, had to put on my own. Edited October 27, 2011 by 4 Strings
