Mykesbass
I've always liked this clean, percussive sound, quite a classic old bass sound to my ears - is it nylon strings and a pick? SteveK
Pick and heavily damped strings - foam or edge of the hand.
discreet
I'm going to say Fender bass, flatwounds and a pick. No doubt someone will be along in a minute to tell you the exact bass, strings and pick, amp, studio, producer, weather at the time of the recording session and what everyone had for breakfast! Sonic_Groove
I would say it is either Herbie Flowers or Klaus Voormann playing -- with either of them there is a whole body of work to check-out!! Keep you busy for some time Brendan Edited October 24, 2011 by Sonic_Groove
That's what I like about this place - satisfies the inner anorak Had a quick look around, surprisingly very little on Mr Siffre, although on a later album he was backed by Chas & Dave who I have a lot of respect for. Thanks for the replies so far - SteveK, would the effect be so percussive with muting?
discreet
If I can jump in here, the effect is percussive because of the muting. Try it yourself!

What i think of as 60's bass playing, i'm quite a fan of it. There's load's of this type of playing on all sort's of 60's records, have a listen to the Scaffold's original 'liverbird's', tho not the cover version from the T.V. show. JTUK
Stock 60/70's film score sound. Heavily muted with a pick. Neil Stubenhaus gives a great demo on a Star licks video. Nowadays you do it with a palm mute as you'd not often set up a bass with foam to get this attack...or at least I wouldn't. You might also use palm mute and thumb nail. casapete
Slightly OT, but the cover by Madness also had a great bassline that didn't just copy the original. Great song.

I don't know why, there are one or two slightly less muted notes that just said, "Rickenbacker". Just a hunch, probably wrong

Clarky
Here's some Joe Osborne pick + Jazz + flats action from the wonderful Glen Campbell/Jimmy Web combination http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QynK5IDalmA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsHUgpSxMoI
Mykesbass
Looks like I'me going to have to invest in some foam (I don't think my poor knackered hands will be up to palm muting). I really want to add this tone to my meagre repertoire. Thanks for all the posts - Clarky, you tipped the balance there with the Notts County Linesman

Hobbayne
This is what I tend to do on my bass. With flats it gives a nice percussive tik tak sound
