JakeBrownBass
Ok, i'm getting confused now about what double bass i have. I originally thought it was a laminate but now i'm not entirely sure, can any one help? What i do know is it's a flat back & was made in Reghin Romania around the 50's-70's. It's had a french bridge fitted. There is plywood bracing inside but the body itself looks like a completely different wood. All help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Jake

TheRev
Have a look at the inside edge of the f-holes. If you see horizontal lines it's probably a laminate, if you can't see any lines, or the lines are vertical, then it's probably a solid top. Probably... The back has a bit of flame, which suggests maple but it could be a veneer over ply or it could be solid maple - hard to tell from the photos. If you really need to know you could take it to a proper luthier for inspection. Either way, it's a lovely bass. I take it this is the one you're selling? I'm very tempted to take it off your hands, but Manchester is a bit too far to go try out a bass.
It is mate but as far as i was aware it was an all ply hence the price, but have been informed it's worth more if its carved. Being a student i really don't want to undersell it. Heres some more photos, i'll try get some in real daylight tomorrow weather permitting. Thanks for the reply though
TheRev
The las two images look like they might be solid wood - the grain on the top lines up with the vertical lines on the ege of the f-hole.

janmaat
At the end it's the sound. But yes solid top should cost more. Get one of these little mirrors that dentists use to have a closer look inside.

Well i've had a great email from a db shop in America advising me about the bass. From the pictures and matching with one he says he has in stock he's come up with this. Reghin advanced carved double bass. All solid wood Romainian made double bass 3/4 Elite series upright with solid carved spruce top, maple sides, solid flat maple back. Ebony fingerboard & tailpiece. Strung with Thimastik spirocores. It's also been fitted with a french maple bridge at some point in it's life. There has been no structural/major repairs to the bass, only has superficial knocks around the edges and some scratches here & there. An equivalent bass today he said is around €1800 & he recommended i advertise it at about 3/4 of that price, which is about £1150 so i reckon my current pricing is about right. Thanks for the help though dude. Got someone coming to look at it tonight Edited October 25, 2011 by JakeBrownBass
