chrismuzz Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Started odd promising but it did seem to turn into a huge mess around halfway through. Couldn't really rate the 8 stringguy, seems like he just wanted to put a load of distortion on and whack the thing! Quote
Doddy Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I dug it. There was some cool unison melodies, and there were some nice chops going on. Let's be honest,it was on a big stage with a big crowd-it was as much about entertainment and showmanship as it was about the actual playing, but I think they did a good job of balancing the two. Norris Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I didn't think it was too bad until about the 3 minute mark, where they broke out of the pre-rehearsed stuff into ... ahem ... improvisation. Would've probably helped if one of them held down a groove while the other clutterf*cked, rather than a clashing free for all. As someone else said, really they should just be guitards and have done with it. Smile and say CHEESE Quote
Muzz Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 ^ This. It was painful. I managed over a minute, and I wish I hadn't. Chops should stay in the butchers. Quote

That was just a small section of an entire concert-they probably spent another 2 hours grooving that night. Quote
SteveK Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011
We used to call it "showing off" in the old days.
Isn't that what we all do when we hit the stage(?) Isn't that the point(?) Not my cup of tea...but, as Doddy says, "it was as much about entertainment and showmanship as it was about the actual playing". Duelling basses?...why not? Quote
paul h Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I quite enjoyed it. And I have definitely seen much, much worse. I would rather watch a bit of fun, cheesy, showing off than someone with a Fodera trying to fit as many notes as possible into a tune that only needs four. Quote
Really? I buy L42 records, and the music I'm do sounds nothing like it. Stop talking crap. Quote
tinyd Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011
... there were some nice chops going...
I'd have to respectfully disagree. I thought there was some fast playing going on, but IMHO rhythmically and harmonically they were all over the place. Some of Victor Wooten's stuff leaves me personally cold, but I'd have no hesitation in saying that the guy has serious chops. But this stuff to me just sounded messy from beginning to end. Quote
Admittedly I'm only listening on laptop speakers but the tone sounded horrible to me - is bass not supposed to actually have some bass in it? Stuff like this just seems like pure musical masturbation to me. No thanks. Quote

henry norton Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 It didn't sound much different to some of Stanley Clarke's electric stuff. At least they didn't look like they were taking themselves too seriously. Yeah, I'm after a whammy bar for my bass too Quote

Skol303 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) More cheesy than a TUC Cheese Sandwich... but I sort of liked it - in a strange way - for exactly that reason! Maybe it's the ****-eating grins that do it for me, I dunno. Made me laugh anyway. I'll just get my coat... Edited October 27, 2011 by Skol303 Quote

Ian Savage Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I'd like it if I could play like that, just so that I wouldn't, out of spite. Quote
skychaserhigh Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Nothing entertaining about that , probably the only ones really enjoying it were the guys playing / showing off. Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Looks like something made for a kids tv show. Super Mario or something, Sounds like the worst70's/80's disco porn music with lots of slapping. Spent about 2 mins , which was too much. I dolike the green bass tho'. Is that wrong? Quote
Alfie Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I love the irony of this video being on a website called "no treble". I could show them a thing or two about no treble. Quote
