Bass String Guide (What to look for when buying bass strings)

I was trying to buy new string for my Spector Euro 4LX and was faced with the usual dilemma about:
[indent=1]* nickel vs. steel[/indent][indent=1]* long scale vs. medium scale[/indent][indent=1]* gauges[/indent]

Some of the information - especially that regarding tension - is wrong.
