max363
I do like MM Stingray, BUT price for me is too high. Way too high. So a though hit my mind couple of weeks ago, and up to today i think about it: to build my own ray! Status graphite ray neck, MM replacement pup and mechanics, and myself build high quality ash body. This way i could get ray for its 30-50% of price. Only question is - will it sound like ray? So by chance someone already done something like this? I would really like to hear your opinions

max363
Lets just say anything by Music Man, let it be stingray or sub is out of my budget sadly, i am unemployed student..And also i want to make some little modifications on body, so i do not actually consider buying factory manifactured bass.. stingrayPete1977
Have you checked the prices of Status stingray necks lately? Still need tuners, bridge, preamp, pick guard, pickup, knobs, strap pins etc then the cash to build a body.

Ou7shined
get yourself a musicman sub,the easy way to do it.
Quite simply this.... plus you'll have to wire the pups up in series from parallel to make truly authentic sounding.

There was a sunburst one up for sale as well which has vanished now. They may not be easy to find in the UK though.
Bigwan
Sounding like a ray on a budget is as easy as A. T. K. - Ibanez ATK! Having owned 4 & 5 string rays (and a bongo until quite recently) even an ATK300 can get VERY close. Have to say the first time I played an ATK was in Guitarguitar in Glasgow and A/Bed the ATK with 2 different EB Rays (one maple board, one rosewood board) and the ATK was FAR superior... just my opinion... Doesn't look much like a ray though. A status ray neck will cost you more new than a used EB Sub and that's before you add neck hardware, let alone a body, bridge and electronics. Lfalex v1.1
And to make matters worse, I have a sneaking feeling that Status necks are supplied as fretted (or fretless if specified) blanks. You'd have to bore the holes for the tuning posts to go through and then drill out holes for the screw/s to secure the backplates. I'd only do it if I had a drill press or similar proper machinery. One slip, and ... you get the idea. Status'll do it for you. But that'll cost even more. Sorry to rain on your graphite parade, but it's not a "cheap" solution. It is, however a quality one. Does it have to be a Status neck? I like a lot of the suggestions everyone else has made (Includung the ATK one) Alternatively, track down a s/h OLP Tony Levin sig or buy a good condition OLP and go from there as funds permit, buying an EQ, better hardware etc. Whatever you elect to do, be aware that if you sell on, you won't recoup your original outlay. So you'd better like it!!
