lanark
I don't know what was around then - what Fender's colourways were at the time. 1968 was a stonking year for music, but what will be my options when I eventually have the money to buy a bass that made in 1968, the year I was born? Lozz196
Sunburst on vintage instruments always seems right, and rarely comes in/goes out of fashion. It`s kind of neutral, so the re-sale value isn`t too affected by it being "out" this year,
Delberthot
The first series of Telecaster basses were out in 1968
TransistorBassMan
I was also born in 1968 http://basschat.co.u...bass-look-like/ Edited November 2, 2011 by TransistorBassMan

That’s what I bought.
Big_Stu
For me - being a bit about Fenders it would have to be a Gibson EB3, which for me were at their best in that year - and who played them in 1968?? Though the one JB is playing isn't a '68.

matski
I was born in 1968 too, so am watching this thread with interest... I must admit I was thinking about a YOB bass a while back and casually surfing the web to see what was available - it did seem that mostly there were Fender Telecaster basses and Gibson EB3s available. There must be old Precisions, Jazzes and Rickenbacker 4001s out there somewhere too surely.
neepheid
What was available in '68? Fender: Precision, Jazz, Telecaster, Mustang, Coronado? Rickenbacker: 4001, 4005? Gibson: EB-0/3 (short scale only), EB-2, Non-reverse Thunderbird? Epiphone: Newport, Embassy, Rivoli? After that, I'm struggling
chris_b
Guild, Kay, Danelectro, Framus, Hofner, Watkins, Burns, Gretch, Ampeg and Fender VI.
neepheid
You have spurred me on to have another think: Yamaha: SA17, SA70, SA70B, SB1C, SB2, SB2A, SB5A, SB7A? Hagstrom: HIIB, Concord, H8 (world's first 8 string bass, allegedly), Coronado IV?
Lfalex v1.1
If the year's applicable; My vote(s) go to Burns Bison or Fender V (EADGC- the15 fret one)
BigRedX
Some the Yamahas listed weren't available in 68. You can see which ones would be applicable here By 1968 the Bison Bass was a Baldwin and not a Burns so nowhere near as good. I'd go for either a Yamaha or a Mosrite. Edit: Or an Ampeg Scroll Bass. Edited November 2, 2011 by BigRedX
neepheid
Some the Yamahas listed weren't available in 68. What about the ones released in October 1968 (SA17, SA70B)? I just read from the very page you cite, what did I do wrong?
BigRedX
You listed the SB2 as a possibility when it was discontinued in 1967 and replace with the SB2A...

Telebass
Seeing as I play a slab, I'd go for the Telecaster...I dread to think what I'd have to pay for my birth bass - 1953...
