MuckedUpFunkies
I'm applying for university this year in a Music degree and have just started getting offers back. Problem is most want an audition first and I dont really have a clue what to play! At the moment I'm thinking a portrait of tracy and Fusion (Grade8piece) but I need at least 3-4 to be getting on with. I was thinking along the Tower of Power/Stevie Wonder line such as Soul with a Capital S or Sir Duke but i dont think either are really complicated enough. So any ideas? Many thanks Dan P.S My top 2 choices are Leeds College of Music and LIPA if this helps!
JakeBrownBass
Nothings too simple. Places like these aren't looking for the next solo bass player, they're looking for someone that can groove & play whats right for the music your playing. They'll be loads of players playing portrait of tracy. smooth, sir duke etc... Maybe think of something different.
Dave D
Not really sure what they would expect to see, but how about something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZyQE8LNKAk Reasonably straight forward parts, but i think it sounds good all together. Or maybe a bit of Bach?!! Very pleasant to listen to, bit old hat, but still nice.
leschirons
Just an after-thought but I heard a mate make a fabulous job on fretless of the Floyd's Coming back to life, basically playing the vocal melody line and adding some bass harmony lower down. JakeBrownBass
FWIW, on my audition for the RNCM I played whitneys greatest love of all & midnight on the dancefloor.
OliverBlackman
i played red hot chili peppers desecration smile for my audition to ACM, nothing harmonically challenging but it just sounds nice when played right.
chris_b
They've seen it all before and played by better players so NO Jaco and definitely NO slapping! Try an arrangement of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp6bd2vf314
OliverBlackman
what about spain by chick corea? its not too difficult and you can really express some soloing ability over the samba section. Might need to re-record it though to make it a shorter arrangement and so the original solo's aren't there
Anton346
The key is to show versatility. If they're expecting several tracks then vary it up in regards to technique and genre. But like JakeBrownBass said - keep it simple, you're expected to function as a bass player so show that you fit in well with the instrumentation around you. Maybe allocate one track to show more of a solo side to your playing but definitely throw in an element of groove and pocket playing. Making custom backing tracks for your audition pieces also shows them that you're prepared to put in the extra work aside from your playing ability. Hope that gives you a few ideas. charic
Actually what about something using a looper?
timo
Victor Wooten's harmonicfest of Amazing Grace (until it goes mental), maybe do your own thing with it too. And River People by Weather Report could be a shout, simple through most of it but you have to keep it tight then breaks into the 16th note groove at the end. MuckedUpFunkies
No lopper available. I spoke to my Music Tech teacher today and he suggests A portrait of tracy as a solo look at me piece, A grade 8 piece as a look at me in ensemble and to play live bass over my last years AS composition piece. I got a B and the bass is pretty funky but I'm not to sure =/

PIck an atmospheric piece from someone like Floyd and play high haunting solo lines under pinned with as may pads as you can in the arrangment. You might have to move the key to accomodate this... Just be original...not flash. They'll see flash all day, every day.
