Super Jazz "Xotic" xj-1t

So I was in Tom Lee music in HK (http://www.tomleemusic.com.hk/home.php) and in amongst the usual selection of Fenders, ESP, Ibby, Musicman and Warwick, I stumbled across two beautiful Xotic 5 sting super-jazzes.

My word, they're nice! I'm usually a 4 string man but this has me scratching my chin.

Questions: has anyone owned (or does own) one of these?
Is there much basschat love for them?
How do they sound in a band context? In my mind the sound would be pretty good, but it's difficult to tell.
Did / do you bother with the mid frequency switches? they seem like a good idea but I just don't know...
Do we know what the resale value is if I get it back to blighty & the honeymoon period ends with a bang?

Lovely basses Dougal. There are some notable players using them like John Pena, Tetsuo Sakurai, Vail Johnson, Chuck Rainey etc. I haven't played one but they sound fantastic. If you get one I'm sure it won't disappoint!

Looks great to me...but you'd have to put some time into them to see where they sit alongside other S-Jazzes
and then how much do they cost.


I would have suggested £1700-2100 but that puts them in range of a lot of other very good examples, IMO...

It goes without saying that is you are buying new, it doesn't want to be a whim, esp with something like this.

I am thinking about a new commission and know I will 'lose' off list price, but then I am will not be selling it on for a good few years..for sure.

I tried one at BassDay last year on Mark's BassDirect stand, Awesome in everyway I have played all the top end gear and these are equal no doubt about it.

I've not tried one but I'd certainly love to, although the aesthetics don't grab me very much. I've heard a few now and quite honestly they sound outrageous. Really very nice indeed. Resale at JTUK mentioned would put it in the category of some other rather nice and ultimately more popular ultra-Jazz's, namely Sadowsky, probably the likes of Nordstrand also.

Im started to get some serious gas for one of these you know! If you look at more youtube clips there is a green sparkle one with a matching headstock, Oh yeah baby Im not in the market right now but next bass will either be a Classic Ray 5, a Mayones Jabba 5 classic or one of the Xotic jazz basses.
