walplayer
Anyone own a mk1 fretless Wal, seen one for sale for £1500 I am pretty sure they are passive?
the only passive ones produced were the pro series with scratchplate or a musicman type control plate . mk1's were all active (except for the odd custom order) Good choices you've got ,surely if you have enough for a Wal you could get a stingray and franklin p for same money I think maybe the players you mention would probably all sound pretty much like "themselves" whatever fretless bass they played ? benthos
For something different, howzabout this? philw
A Manne bass from Italy like the one in the photo below. http://www.manne.com...acoustibass.jpg
I had a Manne Acoustibass for a while. Nice bass but it had a decidedly dark tone and was somewhat a one trick cliché as a result. Not quite up to the build quality you'd expect on a boutique bass either, but we're talking a good few years ago so things may well have improved. However I prefer the Pedulla Buzz (which I also have). That's why the suggestions here can only be suggestions for the OP, and he then need to go and try all the basses in question and make up his own mind. Edit: Also when I play my Lightwave bass it sounds nothing like the clip above, which is why IMO these clips are of limited value and are no substitute for your own hands on experience.
Completely agree re: the value of suggestions - we can only put out suggestions to try. I know what you mean about the sound of these YouTube clips versus what the bass really sounds like in the flesh. I found that the output was very high from the VL5 but once I'd had a fiddle with the trim pots it was great. A little EQ on this goes a long way, too.
