Bassclef Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 For the past 15 months I have been the proud owner of this work of art: http://www.malcolmpr...theorbo-no1.htm and it is now for sale. As you see a theorbo is a sort of cross between a lute and a harp. It came to prominence in the baroque era and is ideal for accompanying song, small chamber ensembles and continuo playing. The six fretted strings are similar to those on a classical guitar but tuned A, D, G, B, re-entrant E and re-entrant A with a scale length bassists will be used to. The eight long bass strings are tuned in mixolydian mode down to G above our bottom E. I bought the instrument from Rob McKillop and have enjoyed learning to play from scratch. But back and leg problems mean I find it uncomfortable to sit down and play for more than about ten minutes. And this is an instrument you cannot play standing up! There are cheap theorbos out there (Early Music Shop make one) but like anything else you get what you pay for. It usually costs around £6000 to have a professional instrument handmade. Comes complete with Kingham case worth £500. The cost is £3800 if collected from me, or £4000 hand-delivered to your door in mainland UK. Serious enquiries only please.

Shaggy Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Ha - what are the chances of 2 theorbo posts within a week? (see: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/160066-excotic-folk-bass-instruments/ ) That's lovely; well worth selling through the Lute Society too if you're not already. If you've got any tutors / sheet tablature you're looking to move on I could be interested.....
