M-N-Y Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Any Larry Klein fans in the house? I always felt his playing was overlooked having followed Jaco into Joni Mitchell's band. I think he is a very intelligent and highly skilled player who deserves more credit. His playing on the track 'Two Grey rooms' is beautiful and his contribution to the Wayne Shorter album 'Atlantis' is similarly impressive. He never really gets mentioned so I thought it might be nice if we could hear from some supporters or indeed detractors. Thanks. Quote
M-N-Y Posted November 13, 2011 Author Posted November 13, 2011 Please check out this piece of music. One of my all time faves. Great bass playing by Larry Klein, along with stellar guitar playing from Michael Landau and lovely orchestration. BassBod Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I listened to Atlantis a lot way back when (80's student with a cassette walkman, and about ten tapes!). Thought his playing was great. Was aware of the Joni Mitchell stuff...but not heard much since. Quote
visog Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 He is good and very tasteful... liked Dog eat Dog and Wild Things Run Free. BUT if you're following Jaco you've a Herculean task ahead of you. Ask Victor B who is a great player but will always be compared with his predecessor - more so than anyone else just by proximity. Seemed to recall LK played a BC Rich at one point?... Quote
M-N-Y Posted November 13, 2011 Author Posted November 13, 2011 I think he has moved more into production these days although he did play with Robbie Robertson and still wheels his trusty Lakland out every now and then. Funnily enough he didn't tour with the Wayne Shorter Atlantis band; bass duties were taken up by a young Gary Willis playing fretted and fretless basses. Quote
M-N-Y Posted November 13, 2011 Author Posted November 13, 2011 (edited) Yeah Visog, +1 on those two albums for sure. I am sure I saw him playing a BC Rich on a live performance from the early 80's. As for following Jaco I feel he did a good job in the circumstances and put his own stamp on things, despite the obvious pressures of following one the of the greats. Guest McBass Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 This is awesome, he's a great producer too...check out Shawn Colvin's Fat City. Quote
Bilbo Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Klein is a great player. I remember working out a great intro line he did on Wild Things Run Fast but I can't remember the track title (may be one of the above but I can't listen here). Also have him on a video from around that time (Refuge of the Road) but, again, can't watch the video as I no longer have a VHS player! Quote
M-N-Y Posted November 14, 2011 Author Posted November 14, 2011 Good stuff, thanks! I really love Joni Mitchell, she produces consistently great work. Is LK playing a BC Rich Eagle? It looks like a nice bass. Quote
costabass Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Ive Always felt Larry Klein had a great sound a unique voice very tasetful and a great accompanist he's playing a BC Rich in this video of a concert I first saw as an impressionable teen The gig is in 2 parts. I really enjoyed his playing on Wild Things Run Free- Joni Mitchell and the other albums. He played on some Don Henley and Tracey Chapman part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPrJNKJcRrs part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOGgeke_n5c Quote
louisthebass Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I think it's LK that plays on "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley? Good player . Quote
louisthebass Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012
I thought that was Pino....
It could be - there's four bass players on the album it came from, Pino, LK, Tim Drummond & Danny Kortchmar... Quote
Larry Klein played on Boys Of Summer , using his fretless Yamaha BB five string . I have been a big fan of Larrys playing for many years, since I heard his intricate and intelligent bass lines on Wild Things Run Fast, and recently came across his fantastic work on Freddie Hubbards Live At The North Sea Jazz Festival 1980 album . I think Larry is playing a straight ahead Fender Precision bass through an SVT and he gets one of the best bass sounds I have ever heard on a record : http://www.youtube.com/results?hl=en&safe=off&q=freddie+hubbard+live+at+the+north+sea+jazz+festival&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&biw=1920&bih=957&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=w1&gl=GB Edited August 10, 2012 by Dingus Quote

Great feel, great tone and presence in the mix. He just seems to move around so intelligently on this one, and adds that 'drive' into the tune. Quote
Thanks for the heads-up on this track- I'm not very well versed in Joni's music in the era after Dog Eat Dog . I see what you mean about driving the song along . I particulaly like the figure he plays starting at 4:07 in the outro. This is going to be tonights play- along track . He's such a crafty and intelligent player who's got a great nack for being busy but still making space ( if that makes sense!) With the qualities he has as a bass player, it doesn't surprise me that he has become a top producer. Edited August 13, 2012 by Dingus Quote
RhysP Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I'm a huge Join Mitchell fan but to be honest Kleins playing has never done much for me. Quote
kevin_lindsay Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Pino didn't play on Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer", that was Larry. Pino played on Don's "New York Minute". Quote
wombatboter Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Then I was mistaken for a long time.. Surprises me still since the tone and the phrasing seem so "vintage" Pino (especially the fills in the muted guitar section are very Pino-like) but I don't claim to be right so... Bit disillusioned still... :-) Quote

Maybe they sound similar in their style of playing fretless in so much as they both wanted to find a voice on that instrument that avoided the direct influence of Jaco. Quote

I love the way those notes lock up with the fading drum sounds and the soaring, rich harmonic sounds from the guitar. Fantastic way to draw the song to a close. Quote
