Happy Jack
I'm torn between voting the way that Macca would have voted, and voting the way that Jaco would have voted. I think I'll set up another profile so that I can vote both ways.

flyfisher
Already we know of one member (not a mod) who created a separate profile so they could like their own posts under the other profile and then asked why we were taking issue with their posts when they were liked so many times...but my lips will remain sealed...they know who they are.
Oh dear. Some serious personal issues there. As I mentioned previously, I can't really see the value in the reputation system because the basis for people's likeing/disliking can never be known unless they post their reasons, in which case there's no need for the system in the first place. But I'm not voting in this poll because I don't really care if the system is in place or not so it seem unreasonable for me to force my opinion on anyone else that does (or doesn't) want it. What ever happens, I'm not likely to use it and I'm not likely to change my opinons or behaviour because of a set of ill-defined 'scores' - though a good well-argued debate is likely to be far more influential. Ou7shined
I'm quite surprised that the "abolish it completely" vote is winning thus far. I voted to keep the "likes"... because it's nice to be nice.

Machines
I think the like thing is a bit of an ego thing. But it's handy on threads where someone makes a good point in a discussion or says something funny - people can identify with them without the need to post a response with something like '+1' which is a waste of a post. If it could be done that way without it having to tally total likes on someone's profile I think that would be ideal.

I confess that I'm checking my 'likes' total, which firstly makes me a really stupid arse and secondly has a bearing on what I'm posting and how... possibly with half an eye on the gallery, which is really not a good way to go.
I've no problem with that; done it myself. What I do think is a waste of space is the endless lists of every single bit of kit a person owns - or worse still a huge list of every artist a person listens to - there should be a limit to the number of lines that can occupy. This just seemed to be change for changes sake - I voted to remove it all.
While I agree with the sentiment, a 'like' button need not be used in a nice way. Consider an abusive/racist/sexist/whatever-ist post - that could be 'liked' couldn't it? Without knowing the motive behind like/dislike voting, it's all a bit meaningless.
That's the reason I at first favoured the Like Only system (as seen on FB, where it only appears on the relevant post/comment and not on the profile). My actual vote, against the system as a whole, assumed that it would stay in its present form and the likes/dislikes still be counted on members' profiles. If what Machines describes can be done, then I support the idea.

Silvia Bluejay
By the way, I would favour the "Like the post" system, but then it would be nice/useful if the names of those liking the post could be seen by hovering the mouse on the number of likes, as on FB. Anonymous likes would be a bit of a waste, as those who would want to be known to agree with something being said would still have to Me-too the relevant post. OK, now I'll stop mentioning FB, promise
