Lack of Gas or Interest Who Knows.

Today went into my local guitar shop, for the first time in months due to work & family.Either way they had some Warwick basses, SX J bass 75 and a host of other brands, but nothing interested me and I have never felt that way when I've gone into a guitar shop there is always something that I think I need.

Have any of you felt like this it was weird I didn't want to have a play on any of them either, there was a new brand there called Deacon not Jim Deacon, looked a lot like the SX even the head stock was the same. Of the 4 basses I have the only 2 that get playing time are my Ric 4003 & my MIJ / MIM Fender Precision.

It all depends in which store you go, I find it hard to visit Guitar Guitar in Epsom and come away without a new toy.

I was in there the other day so we know how many basses they have...LOADS.. and I was distincly unimpressed with the ones I tries in a lot of respects.
It was nice to play them..to get a reference, but I came away thinking they were a lot of money for a pile of junk.

I'd have to spend a lot of time on set-up to get them playable from my POV...which just wasn't appealing considering the money they were asking.

The one cab I also wanted to demo, they didn't have so nothing has deflected me from my planned upgrade in that regard..but as for basses...??
Nope..no GAS..!!

When I go in I never think I need anything. Although I want it.

Recently I've been very happy with my setup so I know I dont need anything. I still would like a Wal.

I don't even bother looking at basses on the rare occasions I go into in music shops now as it's certain they will have nothing that interests me, just the usual Fender & Musicman stuff, possibly a Rickenbacker or two & then the cheaper derivatives of these makes.

Nothing to really worry about. All that's happened is that you have out-grown the rather limited choice most musical instrument shops have.

Hear Hear! If you're near a good shop with a wide selection of basses and gear you are lucky.

+ another 1....

Very recently in the market for another 5 string, and thought I would give the fairly local places a go.......Complete waste of time, and wish I had saved the petrol. Walls full of top of the range Fender and Gibson guitars, then a few stagg, and bottom of the range Ibanez covered in dust, stuck in a gloomy corner was about the norm for the basses. The choices for bass string is not much better either to be honest.

Thinking that I have completely out grown them to be honest, which is a shame, as I like to try and support local businesses, but I have also noticed that none of them have anyone working in there who plays bass. Even had one guy tell me that ALL basses are supposed to play with a high action! :) Get the impression from some of them that if it isn't Fender/Gibson/Rotosound/Ernie Ball Slinky's, it doesn't exist.

From now on, it's online for the strings, and Basschat market place, or a trip to Warwick for everything else :) But genuinely quite saddened by the situation. Even a big shop, that used to have a good bass selection has gone down hill in recent times :)

I regularly go to shops and leave feeling a bit disappointed. Take Guitar Guitar Newcastle, for instance. They've got loads of basses, most middle of the road Fender and Lakland. I'd rarely bother playing a Fender and having tried some of their Lakland stock, I found that very bland too. The most fun I've had there was testing out amps with my old Kubicki, #1659!

It's just down to what you're into, I suppose. I like high end, boutique stuff. Something thats a bit interesting. I'd much rather have one or two nice basses than a larger collection of less interesting instruments. I think the care the instrument has received also plays a part too. When I got my Zon from Retroman, he had set it up very well for me, and it was a pleasure getting a bass from someone with a real passion for them, as opposed to getting one 'off the rack' and thinking "yeah, I suppose this is good enough, I'll take it". Similarly, when I went to see Warwickhunt to get my Streamer, we chatted on for ages about the basses and that sort of thing. I think you can be quite inspired by someone elses passion for a bass, whereas going into a shop and looking at a rack of bland P and J clones can be fatiguing through their banality.

I expect if I went to Bass Direct or something like that, that caters for tastes like mine, I'd leave thinking "what a great shop!".

At least I'm not on my own with this, there were loads of basses I used to lust after & I was always collecting brochures from guitar shops. But as a lot have said here most of the time all you find are either Fenders,Squier or Epiphone or some version of a Precision or Jazz.

At the end of the day if you are looking for something out of the ordinary, you need to visit shops which cater for those type of basses such as Bass Direct in Warwick or The Gallery in Camdem, and the rule of thumb is that frenchise stores like Guitar Guitar will always have the mainstream brands like Fender, Gibson, and the rest of it, not that there's anything wrong with that but... if you are adventurous, seek and you shall find.

Thanks Chris :)

You've pretty squarely hit the nail on the head for me. I had a great afternoon when I bought the Marshall off a fellow BC'er, chatting about gear and stuff.
Bass Direct is a great place - you would be like a kid in a sweet shop in there! Well worth the trip out :)

Which is great if you live close enough to the specialist stores to be able to pop in for an hour every now & then.

There is nothing on the Gallerys website that would make me even consider making the journey from Cardiff & spending the £100+ the day would cost me for.
