VTypeV4
I don't blame you; between the tape machine and the ML you've got a very cool setup there, Al.. I'd love a tape machine but I just can't justify it at the min. As for the PFL issue, I'm not sure there is a work around. Our old GL3000 didn't have an independant PFL / AFL bus level control - as you suggested it was simply dictated by the headphones level. On my 5000, there's not a level control as such but it does have a trim of + or - 12dB to balance between mix / solo but again no speciific level control for the solo bus.. VTypeV4
Well we've started to re-record some of the tracks that were done a while back as they've changed a bit in the time since they were originally recorded. I've been using lots the gear I've acquired over the last few years including the big Allen & Heath, one of the MOTU interfaces and of course one of the three Yamaha 02R consoles amongst bits of outboard and what feels like miles of cables.. I've used the Yamaha as the 'in' using up to eight simultaneous direct outs switched to post fader / eq. It will all later be mixed on the big ML via the out board and some plugins within the software (old CuBase). Of partiicular note are the analogue cards in the 02R as they were recently purchased from Althemusicwizard of this great online community - I rather foolishly sold my original ones a few months back. We live and learn!

VTypeV4
Ha, I know - the computer is equally vintage too! It's an old P4 based machine running XP and CuBase SX but it allowed me to keep the recordings going at work after a recent sucession of increasingly frustrating failures of much newer machines. Thankfully that's all sorted now with me back on Win 7 / PT / AudioDesk there so it seemed logical to put this in our rehearsal space and make use of it. VTypeV4
It'd all been going too well lately hadn't it? I think I've had a PSU fail in one of the 02Rs at work - nothing lit up except the meter-bridge which was cycling through what looked like a self test routine. There's a thread on another forum of another console doing the same thing which turned out to be PSU / connector related so fingers crossed it's nothing horrendous or too expensive. I'm dropping it off for repair tomorrow. The console isn't the same one that failed before, it's the 'other' one that came from London via eBay. It has a couple of sticky faders so I'll get the repair man to address this too.. For now I swapped the cards and O/S chips over into the 'spare' console that was used for tracking on Monday so everything is at least usable at work. VTypeV4
2017-11-25_03-20-43 by VTypeV4, on Flickr It's fixed, tested and seems to be working fine so I'll swap everything back during the week. And no more sticky faders which was becoming a little irritating. The repair has come with an observation though - I've been told that should it fail again in a similar manner then future repair may be very difficult (expensive!) or even impossible. I'm not quite sure of the details of his observation as I didn't speak directly with the repair man but I guess I'll keep it in service until we run (or don't - I might get lucky) into problems down the line. As mentioned before, these consoles are approaching 'vintage' status and I'm under no illusion that they're getting any younger but should the worst happen then they're still plentiful on the 2nd hand market. mike257
I can see where he's coming from - I've got a channel down on one of my 01v, but for the price they can be picked up for, it's barely worth paying an hour of bench time with a repair tech. Might as well just keep stockpiling cheap ones as and when they appear!

The kicker is it had two ADAT and a UNITY card that were apparently in good order..
VTypeV4
It's officially back in service now - gave it a bit of a shake down run last night after swapping all the cards and O/S chips back over and it seems to operating just fine. All of the save data and configurations haven't been lost either which I'm very thankful of as there's one job I was half way through when it let go. All good! VTypeV4
On a slightly different topic, I did the job I always seem to wind up doing for Bullet Sound Co at The Victoria Hall on behalf on St Joseph's college.. St Jo 17 by VTypeV4, on Flickr St Jo 17 by VTypeV4, on Flickr Yamaha LS9, Lab Gruppen / Crown and Nexo boxes - a very different PA than we've used on previous years but reasonably equal in terms of power and quality. Personally, I still prefer the EAW boxes but that's just my preference. It's been a while since I used an LS9 but their lineage and relation to my beloved 02Rs made most navigating really straight forward although I would have rather spent a bit more time building a more personal template. The show was excellent and went without issue (as ever) and shows there maybe hope for the next generation of musicians yet.
VTypeV4
3rd 02r return by VTypeV4, on Flickr So we had a little bit of a hiccup with the 'analogue card' console a few weeks back - I think there was a weird power spike in the studio as it also upset one of the SPX FX units and sent the computer nuts too. The faults were a couple of channels down with no A/D conversion, a dead line on the screen and a few other glitches suggesting something was unwell. Thankfully, as ever the repair man (K. Edwards Electronics) has cured the ills except for the screen but that wasn't the end of the world. A quick shakedown last-night seems to have it back on form as can be seen in the pic above. It may be 2018 but they're still going (strong now they've all been fixed in the last few years!) and earning their bit.

VTypeV4
It's been a while since I've posted here - my 02R's, the ML5K and GL are all still in service and are happily working in their respective roles however, I've not touched them for a few weeks. I've had life chaos to contend with but more importantly, I've been away with a well known, hard working '80s group Spear of Destiny. Here's some pix.. Although not a direct comparison - I suppose an MH4 would have been closer but I just felt the A&H was more 'complete' and better implemented. And fave console of the week? The iLive - really well laid out, clear to view, easy to use and manipulate and a close second, the VI, I felt a bit of lineage between my old 328XD with things being horizontally presented. VTypeV4
Another trip across the water into France this time at the St Brieuc Ink Mas Fest.. France 18 by VTypeV4, on Flickr Long Tall Texans - Rockabilly / Psychobilly band on after the Theatre of Hate set.. France 18 by VTypeV4, on Flickr Yamaha CL5 for FOH which was super - it felt like an LS9 on super steroids and as all Yamaha's do, it felt like a Yamaha which made me very comfortable with it after only a few minutes. They also had a Soundcraft Vi series on stage for monitors.. Back to the 02Rs, the ML and GL this week and next before yet another set of road trips around the country - who knows what I'll be presented with. 😀

mike257
Lovely stuff! Plenty of nice new Yammies. I've mostly been tour managing and guitar wrangling recently, but I did get to give a dLive a little run out in the real world at last before Christmas and it's a VERY impressive piece of kit. A&H, Behringer / Midas seem to be flavour of the month with a lot of places lately - no complaints here as they're all easy to work with and quickly achieve a decent mix.. VTypeV4
01V 819 by VTypeV4, on Flickr Trying an alternative solution - picked this up today for very few pennies. I'll see how it performs next week. 😀
VTypeV4
I put the 01V into service on the live scene this evening to see how it performed. I had no trouble with it - everything worked as it should, all parameters were familiar and navigating the console was reasonably straight forward although the (slight) lack of surface controls was a minor issue compared the 02R which is arguably unfair with 01V being physically so much smaller. 01V action wed819 by VTypeV4, on Flickr I'll do a more in depth look at the little Yamaha as it gets used more.. mike257
Nice to see they're still going strong! I've been spoilt lately, spent the whole of August on a Digico SD5! Everything else feels tiny in comparison now. Really impressed with it too - I'd only ever used Digico very briefly and not had time to get comfortable, but having spent a month with one I'm fully converted, such a well featured and powerful bit of kit. VTypeV4
Thanks, Mike.. SD8 and SD9 experience for me albeit limited if I'm honest. I rather like Digico boards as they're pretty straight forward - I love that when you move the DCA faders, it moves the associated channel faders which is very cool..
