mudmover
Only days into playing my new toy, I've already realised that I will need headphones in order to practise when the kids are in bed. Is there any particular make/ type that I should go for?? Off to Cardiff tommorow and the wife has already realised the need and offered to pay Maybe she will change her mind when my true ability is discovered,,,sadly that maybe a while away!! Cheers guys Max
paul_5
HiFi buffs I know swear by Grado GR60s (if memory serves), but I've got a pair of fairly cheap sennheisers that do me. It's only for practicing, not monitoring/mixing.
charic
What kind of budget are you looking at? I would recommend a pair of studio headphones, that way if you want to mix music on them you can do that too BeyerDynamics are great headphones IMO
VTypeV4
Sennheiser HD25 still sound pretty good to me..
ShergoldSnickers
I'll second the Grado suggestion. They specialise in headphone manufacture, and also make turntable cartridges - both to high quality. Even the lower end of the range of the headphones sound good, with a nice solid bass end that isn't overblown or artificially boosted. Prices range from about £80 for the SR60 to over £1000 for the GS1000i
73Jazz
I really love sennheisers, but for playing bass, i absolutely recommend AKG 171 MKII. First you may be disaapointed, because it doesn't sound bombastic like others. But after a few seconds you will love the neutral sound, it sounds natural and you are really able to analyse whatever. gt4ever
i've had my senheiser hd25's for about 12 years and theyre still going strong and doing the business.. bonus using them when you got kids is when you got them on it blanks out their noise too..result. Ed_S
I like the sound of Sennheisers, but sadly I've never found any that are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time - the ear pads seem to be quite small and rest on my ears rather than going over them, which means that in half an hour I'm in pain. Maybe I'm just a big-head I do, however, swear by a pair of cheap AKG K-55s that I bought just to bulk up an order from Thomann and get free shipping a few years ago. They're big and old-school, and comfortable to the point where you forget that you're wearing them. They also handle some serious volume and bass frequency, even though they're marketed as HiFi, not studio. So yeah, AKG would be my vote! Davewick
+1 for the Akg, but the K512 model, 40 euro and a incredible quality (the speakers are harman kardon!!!!)
crez5150
Have a look at the Beyer DT 770+ Large Diaphragms and sound lush!
discreet
Sony MDR V700s. Used them for years, full-range (5-30000Hz) and very comfortable. You won't do better for the cash. Don't buy on eBay though - too many fakes. captain black
AKG's for me every time. K240's look ideal. They are what I'm going for. I already have K701's for my stereo and they are by far the best headphones I've ever heard.
Walker
Grado's. Best £80 I ever spent. I rediscovered my music collection! Open backed though, so those around you will hear what you are listening too, so not great for the commute. Also, you look a bit like a Sputnik when you are wearing them. dave_bass5
Ive got some Grado SR60's but dont really like them. First off i normally plug in to the PC and thats in the living room so being open backed they are too noisy. Sound wise they are great but i hate, with a passion, the cable that they come with. This alone has put me off using them. I now use Sennheiser HD215 but im always on the lookout for something a bit fuller sounding, i might have a look at the AKG's mentioned. Walker
Couldnt agree more about the cable. I've got the 80's and everytime I use them I swear I'll get the cable replaced. They look and feel cheap in my opinion, but they sound so damned good - looks like all the budget was blown on the drivers. The What-HIFI 5 star thing did it for me. dave_bass5
Yeah, i keep saying im going to replace the cable on mine but never get around to it. To my ears they sound quite similar to my cheap Sennheiser PX100's so i tend to use those more. Tankdave
I have the HD25's and whilst I find them unconfortable for extended wearing, they are the best for DJ club use. Before I went back to my trusty HD25's, I was given to try "and keep" the Pioneer HD2000's, these are superbly comfortable and are simply awesome for bass playing. The downside is the stupid price. dave_bass5
Bugger, im getting headphone GAS now. Just been looking in to the 25's, they look very, very nice. I noticed there is the more costly, and better looking HD 25-1 II and the cheaper 25-SP II. Any comments on the differences?
charic
Just remembered this thread! These are the ones I used before I think: http://www.dv247.com/headphones/beyerdynamic-dt-100-studio-headphones-grey-400-ohm--5010 Bloody fantastic for mixing and general listening alike. Should be great for practicing bass too! Bear in mind these are studio style headphones (monitors for your ears) and are likely to show up any flaw that you give it a chance to see. They're comfy too and won't fall off of your head if you getting bobbing.
