sixdegrees
I'm about to replace the stock pups in a MIM Precision. I used to have a MIJ 1980s Jazz Special (original Duff McKagan model) and I loved the punch that it delivered so I guess I'm after that tone. The Jap had quarter inch high-output pups, and the closest I know of is the Seymour Duncan SBP 3 Quarter pounder. Does anyone have any experience of replacement pups that they could recommend? Playing mainly classic rock/metal covers. Thanks in advance for any help.

Platypus
The 'Trad' P bass pickups from Wizard work very well http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/shop.asp?category=Bass

Lozz196
I had the Quarterpounders, and they are very powerful, but to me they "de-Fender" the Precision. They add lows and highs, but also seem to add a metallic twang to the sound. Not as in Metallica either. Of course, for a Precision with just the P pickup, if trying to get the Duff sound these are a very good way to start. Change the pots from 250 to 500 would also get a bit more bite into the sound. However if you like the Duff sound, why not get a J pickup installed in the bridge on the Precision. Put in a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack - instant Duff, as that`s what he uses. Bit of extra expenditure sure, but a lot more versatility, and on an MIM P it`s unlikely to affect resell value to the negative.
