Many thanks MB1!

Just for once - being an obsessive sad B*****D vintage bass geek was a handy thing to be!!
To be honest I would have paid that much just for the 1960 neck alone - even though it needs a lot of restoration - as the magic of having anything from one of the very first Jazz basses fascinates me. To get a '60 body & all the other bits was luck really & maybe a reward for being ready to take a punt. Funny thing is I had only just told a mate (who was looking for an old Gibson) to not even consider finding a 'bargain' vintage guitar on eBay - as they were none to be had anymore!

All the best

Looking forward to the unvieling ceremony, hope all goes well!.(nice to see some good news, regarding ebay instead of the normal horror stories.)
Come on you tease, when do we get pics of the emporer in his new clothes?

:)
Unfortunately, it will be a while yet - a couple of months probably...as it will take a month at least just for the nitro cellulose lacquer to dry properly.
And I'm waiting for some custom electrics for the stack knobs to come from the US.
You can't rush a job like this - it's got to be done properly!
But as soon as it's all done I'll be taking loads of photos - & I'll post them here first (of course!).

I've been stitched up more than once on eBay - so I'm thinking of it as karma!

that's a thought, if the guy had just sold the parts he'd probzo have gotten more money for it!

Without a doubt. Much, much more than he got for the complete bass...
And that was a possible option for me until I had it confirmed that both the neck & body were 1960 originals.
stick a j retro in there!

:)
When I was first planning what to do with the 'orange beast' I had considered a J Retro...
But once I'd found out that the body was also 1960 like the neck I decided to go for a full restoration - so I've now sourced 250/250k pots (the 62 reissue stack knob kit is good for the knobs & control plate - but has has 250/500k pots which aren't authentic for a 60 bass) - & even got wax/paper capacitors & carbon comp resistors to the original spec from this amazing guy on eBay who hand builds vintage components.
So no - there'll be none of that fancy new modern electronics nonsense!
Yuk!

 • 3 months later...
Hi
How's this going?
The body has been painted (black) & the neck has been refretted, I've sourced an original all celluloid tshell pickguard from the US (you really don't want to know what that cost :) ) - so all the parts are now correct apart from the controls which are perfect reproductions. A set of original stack knobs did appear on eBay - & sold for $2,500! I just wasn't prepared to pay that much - when the pots would probably have been shagged anyway.

All that is holding things up is the lack of just the right type of nitrocellulose lacquer (there's no point cutting corners now after all the effort that's gone into restoring this correctly) - the importer is waiting for it to be shipped by sea from the US (they can't ship flammables by air).
Unless anyone here has any Behlen 'Master' Nitrocellulose Stringed Instrument Lacquer going spare???
That 'might' finally be here in 2 weeks (been waiting for months) - then there will be a month wait for the lacquer to dry...!!
Yep. It's torture....

The light was really poor today & I didn't have much time...
...but here's a quick taster.
I'll do a full set in the 'Bass Porn' section soon.
:)
