paul, the
Shakin' it to Virgin Groove earlier, I noticed what a great tone Tommy Cogbill gets on Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" (Lady Soul 1968) I had to find out more about the man and soon discovered the Bass Player info shown below. It describes and shows the beautiful '50s P-bass used along with the one-speakered Twin Reverb on "Son of a Preacher Man", but the tone created is completely different to the likes of the sound on Lady Soul. It's bound to be a flatwound strung Precision into an Ampeg combo (also pictured), but the article suggests it might not be the same Precision as used on SoaPM Aretha Franklin – Chain Of Fools – Listen free at Last.fm Dusty Springfield – Son of a Preacher Man – Listen free at Last.fm Some Tommy Cogbill (among others) transcriptions on Aretha Franklin songs: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/freebasspart.p...ha_Franklin.htm So this thread celebrates the likes of Tommy Cogbill and Jerry Jemmott: the guys, like Jamerson, who knew how an electric bass should be played. I'd like to add my appreciation for the work of Leroy Hodges from Memphis, with Al Green, and best of all Ann Peebles.

bass_ferret
Good stuff. Why not stick it in the wiki instead of leaving it here to fall off the page?

spike
Jerry Jemmott is definitely one of my bass heros. He played bass for King Curtis for a while. Check the tracks "Instant Groove" and the live version of "Memphis Soul Stew" for some great Jerry Jemmott bass playing. "Aretha Franklin Live at the Fillmore West" is also very much worth a listen Just found this on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Loy55z4GpA Edited March 28, 2008 by spike

Wil
I think Tommy C plays on Dusty Springfield's "Take a little piece of my heart" too, and its a stunning line.

I've got the original recording from the live LP - one of my all time favs - never thought it would be out there on video. It sounds very hollow and woody to me, rather than warm and sweet. But I agree, a very infectious line. Comparison: Dusty Springfield - Take Another Little Piece of My Heart at – Listen free at Last.fm Aretha Franklin – Chain Of Fools – Listen free at Last.fm ----- Another song with a great tone: Aretha Franklin – People Get Ready – Music at Last.fm Chain of Fools still has my vote. It's almost Tuba-like. I have no idea how they do it.
