citymariner
Well my P has a P/J configuration so it's been interesting that people have brought up this as a factor. Lots of info to chew and research- thanks for all your responses. I will consider secondhand - my MIA P was secondhand and was a custom job by a sessionist up in Scotland. Plays beautifully. I am a guitarist as well being a bassist (hides for cover) I don't know whether that will set me in better stead for going to 5. The 4 string variety of the 70s J by squire will set me back £238 - I mean that is just silly! Ben Jamin
I've seen a few Peavey T-40s go for less? These things are from the late 70s/early 80s and supposedly built like tanks, Pretty good range of sounds too USA made - passive/active mode - humbucker/single coil mode. Edit: in-fact there's a good looking one on eBay for not much more at the moment: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item336ed89d0d Edited December 4, 2011 by Ben Jamin

citymariner
That T40 looks nice but there is just something about it that doesn't click with me. Stoopid as that probably sounds to you!! That Yamaha seems an excellent piece of kit but is out of my price range. Saving for a wedding you see... I'm moving closer and closer to the Squier VM Jazz. I haven't read a bad review yet and for £238 it's yet to have a competitor! Gauntlet thrown?

Aww man I've got GAS now
Got your name on it! though.... and a wider point to the OP think what will go with your amp. For instance the T40 is awesome through anything with a bit of grit or valveyness to it- like amazing. (and the best sound I've got out of Trace stuff too) Through my Tecamp rig.... it's not so great- but my warwick likes it. (My P sounds good through anything)

charic
Get a mexican jazz, swap the neck out for a p neck then you'll have a Jazz and a Precision in your arsenal
brensabre79
for that amount beer tokens try a squier J and fit it with a pair of wizards and a gotoh bridge warning! youll prob end up using it as your main bass
I did exactly this! Bought the VM77 Jazz bass as a backup for my Sabre. Haven't played the Sabre in months! I use the VMJ 4 nights a week and its easily as good to play as my American Standard JB fretless. Next I'll be buying the Squier VM70s fretless and leaving the Fender at home!
Linus27
No recommendations from me because I am not you But... if I was you, I'd spend the cash on a lovely butterscotch Squier 50's style P bass, stick a duncan q/pounder in there and ftw! Cheers
This is exactly what I was going to say also. My main bass is a US Precision and I have some big gigs coming up next year. I am look at getting one of these 50's Precisions as my backup as chances are, it will never get played but if it does in the event of an emergency, then it will do a cracking job and they are cheap enough to not be a big outlay. Paul S
Actually there is a seriously good bass for sale here at the moment - stretches your £300 a looooong way - a mint 80's Ibanez SR800: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1458653 If it were a different colour I'd have this on my rack already. Edit for ridiculous spelling mistake. Edited December 6, 2011 by Paul S
