Davo-London Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Just wondering. I have preamps on my basses so I don't really want tone control on my amp. I guess power amps just have volume controls but they tend to be quite large. So does anyone make a class D amp with just a volume control? I'm thinking of a Compact Barefaced cab to go with it. Cheers Davo Quote
Davo-London Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Markbass LM III, Ashdown MiBass 500 and the TC Electronic RH750 or Staccato 51 look possible alternatives if I can't find one without EQ. Anyone have thoughts on what combines well with BF cabs? Cheers Davo Quote
geoffbassist Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Acoustic image used to, but not any more. Quote

ead Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I use a GK MB500 with a Compact (soon to be Compacts!) - great combo, and I rarely use much EQ and no Contour! Quote

alexclaber Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 If you're after minimal colouration in lightweight form I'd be looking at Markbass, Acoustic Image and Euphonic Audio amps. Unfortunately they all have rather a lot of knobs but you can leave them all at zero! Quote
Ghost_Bass Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 The Amplite looks really good. If it had a Balanced DI out instead of that XLR input and JACK through on the back it would be on my GAS list as #1!!! Well... nothing is perfect! I can see a market niche over here for BC'er who knows his way around electronics though... Quote
Jack Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 This comes up quite a lot, I'd certainly want one. I want this one. Quote
Davo-London Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Thanks for the replies. Very useful, I think I might start with Markbass! Cheers Davo Quote

Owen Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 This is a question which comes up (I am guilty of it myself!), The conclusion I came to is that small power amp on it's own is unlikely to be any smaller than the new micro heads really. Quote

alexclaber Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 From a manufacturing perspective, once you've made a power amp, a power supply, an input stage to the power amp and a casing (let alone a DI or any other features!), then the cost of adding some more preamp circuits and knobs is fairly minimal - so you'd have to sell a micro-power-amp for almost the same price as a complete micro-amp. And as not many get sold it would be prudent to charge a premium to compensate for either the increased production cost due to smaller volume, or the increased capital tied up in slow moving stock if you make them in higher volume production runs. Hence they remain a bit of a rarity! Quote
Musicman20 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I'd opt for a Genz 900 amp and bypass the pre by feeding into the Return on the Rear. High power, small, light, and also a full amp if you use the front of it haha! Quote
Davo-London Posted December 15, 2011 Author Posted December 15, 2011 Oh I didn't expect it to be any smaller than the current D-class offerings. However, there is something v sexy about an amp with one control (ie volume). For some reason that really appeals to me. There's a hi-fi purity in it. If you compare that to this: Then I think you'll see my point. Since you are onboard Alex, have you noticed any amp/cab matches that really work? Particularly for a Jaco tone on fretless? phatbass787 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Im pretty sure with the Ashdown MiBass you can turn the EQ off and then you will just have input gain and volume... Quote
Depends if the amp still imparts it's own inherent voicing. You can set the eq flat on any head, but they still don't all sound the same. Quote
