xilddx
Bass Player Magazine had him on the cover last month, and the Guardian had Brainfeeder (with a photo of him, The Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus) on the cover of the Guardian Guide a couple of weeks ago, they also noted it's been said he is the future of bass, and clearly thought what Brainfeeder are doing is incredibly innovative. I heard some of Thundercat's album the other day, 'The Golden Age of the Apoclypse', he's a very, very clever bassist, no doubt, and revered in high circles, mates with Hadrien Feraud, Stanley Clark, et al, but the music bored the sh*t out of me. I just can't see any real merit in it. Can you? Huw Foster
Personally, I quite like the album. It remains to be seen whether he's the 'future of bass' though.
Nyl
not my cup of tea really, i could put it on in the back ground maybe, but i can't see myself sitting down to listen to it.
Conan
This Thundercat? Sounds like the out-takes from a Level 42 track that was too dull to make it onto the "Standing in the Light" album. Dull, dull, dull. chris_b
I'm always interested when it comes to things bass, so I'm sitting here listening to Thundercat. Future of bass? Well if you were listening in 1966, but Prog Rock covered all this ground 35 years ago. This guy isn't even original let alone the future of anything! That's 5 mins of my life I'll never get back!! Conan
Yeah. There is nothing original there that I can discern. His tone is pretty uninspiring too (IMO). The bass solo in that "single" is bloody awful. Totally pointless. A solo should be there to "say something" - and that something should be more than just "listen to how clever I am and how many random notes I can play quite quickly". I find it rather depressing that this/he could be described in such glowing terms...

urb
I like the dude but I think there's a danger he'll get over-hyped - he works with Flying Lotus who's one of the most exciting producers around right now - I don't think it's going to be everyone's cup of tea but that's to say it's sh!te - personally I like the album, it's a grower and I think it's good there's a bassist out there trying to write and sing his own tunes rather than just doing the usual shred fest... anyway I like a lot of stuff many people don't like! Wolverinebass
I agree with Chris and Silddx. It's total crap and dare I say it, sounds like music that got rejected out of Casino Royale (the spoof original) for being too lounge or boring. Whilst I don't necessarily think that there's much to be discovered that's "original" per se, that stuff is so insipid that for it to be called the future of anything except the lift music at Dignitas leaves me somewhat perplexed. risingson
I like Flying Lotus a lot, but I can't say I've come across this guy until now. He's not the future of bass playing, I think people get a little ahead of themselves when they come out with stuff like that. I'm not going to rip into him though because he's doing what he wants to do and I don't see a problem with it. He's not the one to have said that he's the future of bass, he's just a musician making music that isn't to everyone's taste, so fair enough to him I suppose, even if I do find his music pretty uninteresting. xilddx
I actually really wanted to like this album. You should read the interview with him in BP. You'd think he was the second bloody coming from the piece. Then I heard it and wondered if it was the same thing they were talking about. BottomE
"Future of" tag is the kiss of death in most things. He's just another player. I don't read any music press so am oblivious to whoever the new darlings are in the music media world. Time is the greatest judge.

urb
I think he's good and I think it's dangerous to dismiss someone who's only been around for five minutes - give the guy a chance to develop - he's got a lot of good ideas even if you don't necessarily like them. Anyone who is being hailed as the 'future' of anything is almost always the victim of a journalist desperate to 'get there first' and break a new artist... like I said don't believe the hype - well it's obvious you guys don't - just be careful you don't knee-jerk yourselves too far into reverse...
