pete.young
I've just had an email from a very nice chap called Peter Hall of the Cultural Foundation, to say that he's put some videos of Back Door featuring Colin Hodgkinson on bass on youtube. Peter says: "They can be rated at their own page: 1. Colin Hodgkinson plays “Snab’s Rag” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRUjH1zAcZA 2. “Shaken by Love” with Rod Mason on alto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGOx_ojlJfc 3. “Vienna Breakdown” with Rod Mason on soprano http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MblGNQnIpFY 4. “Askin’ the Way” with Ron Aspery on soprano http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh8SbL3xQPE 5. “Human Bed” with Ron Aspery on soprano http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf5BPZTdtV4 6. “Lydia Moon” with Ron Aspery on alto and Tony Hicks on accordion (rare!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELred1G5HE8 This as a precursor to the proposed 2008 launch of a special DVD: an impressionist celebration of the work of this unique trio featuring recent and archive performance footage, interviews, etc etc It’d be helpful to gauge interest in this DVD, currently in production." Golchen
Great bassist who doesn't seem to get talked about all that much. I was just watching him on YouTube a couple of days ago. I even have Backdoor on Vinyl!
FJ1200
I have a video of Colin on the TV with Alexis Corner from back in the 80's - one of my most treasured possessions. I only had a b&w tv at the time, I commented on it on one of those videos and some guy had the same video in colour. Can't remember the TV series but it's great. Going to put it on DVD when I get chance. Saw him in the late 80's at the Barbican Guitar Festival on the Peavey stand. Got a photo somewhere. nig
I saw back door at the kursaal in the mid 70's, I think they were supporting vandergraaf generator or hawkwind.....I thought...bass, sax and drums, this'll be crap, then was blown away by a mad jazz prog fusion, oh happy daze... Buzz
Would it be wrong of me to say that I thought this thread might not have had any musical relevance at all, moreso if it had been posted in offtopic?

yorks5stringer
Ah, I feel a major reminisce coming on... I saw Back Door twice in the early 70's ( pre 73) when I was still at school up in Newcastle. The first time was around the re-release of their first album called "Back Door" by Warners, as I think they had done a private white label pressing first. After the gig at the Mayfair?? I wandered into the dressing room ( the innocence of youth) and got the sleeve signed by CH himself: he was busy wiping off his strings! The second time I saw them was at Biddle? Arts centre near Washington and they augmented the band with Alexis Corner, who really just sat in with them rather than being integral to the band. Seeing Back Door was one of the reasons I took up playing the bass... as I did not play it at the time. Not long after I went to Leeds Poly, got an EB2, a Truvoice 50 watt amp, and 15" cab the size of a Smeg fridge. It still took me 15 more years before I actually played in bands! David Nimrod
I'm ashamed to say I've never listened to this band; but they're great! Thanks for the links, musical education never ceases
Golchen
Colin played on an album I have by Neal Schon and Jan Hammer. Great bassline on a track called 'wastin time' - but I doubt that anyone here has even heard it!
Spoombung
Colin Hodgkinson was a big influence on me. Fantastic, underated bassist

PS I've got both Back Door and 8th Street Hights on vinyl, with Back Door signed by the Band if anyone wants to make me an offer? wateroftyne
"The Bottom Line" is the only 'bass player album' that I can listen to and enjoy... Colin's a great player. Watching those clips brings back memories of playing at The Lion Inn. great gig.

KevB
I'd only seen him in Whitesnake and wasn't aware of his earlier stuff when I saw him at an Alexis Korner tribute show in Buxton. He did San Francisco Bay Blues as a solo bass spot and I realised just how good he really was. Must be a good few years back as Tony Ashton and Noel Redding played and they've both been gone a while...
Spoombung
Oh man, just acquired the first Backdoor album on CD. I played this over and over again when I was learning back in the 70's and it still sounds miraculous.

Must dig it out for another listen!

I still have the copy I bought second-hand from Judd's in Canterbury around 1974. It was a 'eureka' moment for me, though I've spent most of the intervening years realising just how big the talent gap is. One of these days I'll get around to digitising it. I also occasionally wonder if the first owner realised his mistake in parting with it!
