If it's a '73 then the maple board should have black inlays.

Don't know where that MZ number is from, you can kinda make out the serial number on the neck plate, which does appear to start right for the time period.

Definitely dodgy, perhaps a bitsa at best?

plus i have since some 70's jazzes with white blocks but on a sunburst body

From what year though? Pearloid blocks on maple was only introduced in 1974/75 as far as I'm aware.

The picture looks OK, but an "MZ..." serial number is wrong. MZ is, I think, a Mexican Fender number (my Mex tele is MN...). The serial number for a 73 Fender should be on the neckplate and should be just numbers (ie no letters in it)

so it is a scam? he said i could pickup the bass

I would go and have a look at it then. If the serial number is MZ***, as he says it is, its not a 73 Jazz. End of!

And an MZ number would be on the headstock. A 73 Jazz would have the serial number engraved on the neck plate. There are lots of other clues, but its difficult to say definitively without looking at it in the flesh.

thats what i thought and lend me to it being a scam

Yeah £900 asking price for an original 1973 jazz bass plus the old "it was my grandad's, I'm not interested" type line is a bit suspicious. Standard stuff to be worried about I suppose, it would be awesome if it all turns out legit though and you swipe yourself a vintage jazz for just £600 or so!

Simon I'm sure I read some where that when Fender introduced maple boards it was only with black blocks up until the mid 70s, when they then replaced this with pearl blocks though?

It is a 70's reissue of some sort then modded.

He has gone to the effort of putting a fake neckplate on with a 6 digit S/N but still gives out the Mexican one!
