Dood
Hi all, Ok so I know there are plenty of bass preamps on the market with the ability to tailor the mid frequency centres and the treble too, but other than going for a bespoke design ( I have one or two in mind) are there any off the shelf that can at least switch between a couple of centres at least? Better still, sweep-able?
JTUK
[sup]Shack used to do one where you could reset almost anything you like....right across the range, but you would have to have the back off ..and not something you could/would do mid song so not a sweep as such[/sup] [sup]tbh...It was too much choice and it could get confusing unless you were VERY methodical about your settings.[/sup] [sup]I wouldn't say this was a drop in pre either...[/sup]

It was a great preamp but I don't think they were available as an after-market!
Dood
Cheers guys - yes, it seems information is a bit thin on the ground around interweb world! I'll have a nose at ACG/East too.

[/quote] let us know what you find out... the east SP2 http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/East_SP2.html seems to have tuneable bass and treble points and a choice of mids, could work? what have you already tried out preamp wise? StraightSix
I use a very early John East J-Retro preamp in my Fender Jazz and it is excellent. I actually got involved in testing this with John when he was designing it pre-production.
brensabre79
I have the John East J-Retro on my fretless. The sweepable treble and bass on there is great for for picking out frequencies for double bass effect or the Jaco growl, but I have to say in a gig situation the endless possibilities are often more of a hindrance to dialing in a good sound quickly. I find myself constantly tweaking mid song to get it right. On my fretted Jazz I ended up fitting a simple 2 band treb/bass stacked arrangement based on the original (preEB) MusicMan preamp (tweaked slightly for single coil PUs). I can get the sound I want pretty easily and the frequencies are fixed. I have thought about experimenting with the circuit so I can pick one of two or three fixed bass frequencies to cut/boost to for a sort of hybrid between the East and the MM arrangement but to be honest I haven't needed it on my fretted bass and the East circuit is too complicated (and expensive) for me to mess with! Dood
Thank you for the feedback Bren'. My plan is based on the point you have made actually. I can't really be dealing with too much 'on the flight deck' as it were. Really a volume control and pickup selector is enough. I'd like to have an eq controllable with preset style pots instead of ones on the front of the bass, so I can tailor the voice of the instrument, set and leave then use my back line to adjust stage sound. All the electronics and controls could then be out the way, set and left. I think with this in mind I am looking at a bespoke solution, or I have to use an external eq if necessary. [/quote] or if you do get something with sweepable bass/treble etc that comes without pots, then you can wire in micro pots to turn with a screwdriver, get a cavity cover made with holes for these and do it that way
