Truly Expressive Guitarists - Know Any Personally?

Despite the huge amount of guitarists around, I find really expressive players are very rare. I've known a lot of guitarists but only a handful could really touch me with their playing. Almost all of them have had a 'plastic' quality to their playing despite great technique and knowledge.

My brother can deeply move me with his playing, and there was a kid I was was at school with 30 years ago who influenced me to play arpeggiated chords, he had such natural ability and I could listen to him for ages. The young fella I play with in Kit's band is really good too and does a few things that make me shiver.

So do you have any friends who can really thrill you with their guitar playing? Players doing something a bit different and really expressive?

My mate Stitch always seems to pull something out of the bag. Perhaps not to the degree you are talking about though.

When he plays acoustic he can really make the notes come alive. I have listened to him for hours!

We usually start to jam but my playing tails off as he takes things into different directions that I find hard to follow :(

I can't dig the blues but your man has a lot of soul, and a very nice touch.

I only ever had one friend who'd playing I thought was fantastic - He's always been up there with my all-time favourite players.
Unfortunately he died from a brain tumour 10 years ago when he was 36.
That was when I started to lose interest in playing & it's never really come back.

I had a video of a gig we did in Cardiff in 1990 & it was one of my most treasured possessions. My partner accidentally threw it out with a load of old VHS tapes about 18 months ago & I was heartbroken.

That's terribly sad mate. You should get your mojo back in his honour if you can.

There's a bloke called Dave Cox comes to the Old Volunteer in Carlton quite regularly. He's the best guitarist I've *ever* come across. Perfectly capable of making his living with the instrument should he choose to do so. Anyway, a few weeks ago he stood up & played a Blues (he doesn't usually do Blues) and played probably the greatest Blues solo I've ever heard.

Every note seemed considered - he seemed to have time to pick it. The right length; the right intonation.

For me, it was perfect. It didn't quite bring a tear to my eye, but it was heading that way.

I've had the pleasure of playing bass for him a couple of times since.

One of the guitarists in my ex-band, The Buffalo Riot, blew me away on a weekly basis. He'd been all round the houses and played everything, but in this band he was effectively the pedal steel player. Only he did it with a guitar, a volume pedal, a tiny amp and a dash of reverb. If you closed your eyes you would swear you were hearing great steel playing, the sounds he coaxed out of it were amazing. Made it look and sound effortless too.

I've been lucky enough to play with a couple of such guitarists. One was a complete knobhead and the other completely unreliable (and not just late, he would frequently forget guitar, or amp, or leads, he would even forget to play sometimes in the middle of a gig! - when he turned up). Shame because they both moved me in diffrent ways with their playing, neither was technically very good. Its often the ones who don't have such great technique I guess because they play from the heart rather than the tutorial...

I've recently had the pleasure of gigging with all my fellow Licklibrary tutor guitarists, Andy James, Jamie Humphries, Mike Casswell, Danny Gill and Stuart Bull. Add to the mix, Pin (ex-Sikth) who i worked with in a band for a cuppla years, Steve Smyth (Forbidden/Nevermore/Testament) from a recent project and Jamie Hunt (ex-biomechanical) and the superb Leah Woodward who plays with Pin in the band Aliases, i reckon they are amongst my fave guitarists and friends. They all have their own styles and feel, even if some are in to brutal tech metal!

Used to play a few sets with Widgeon Holland (Texas). Fairly handy blues guitarist. Got too into the showman side of things for my liking though.
Jim Kirkpatrick (UK) is a gifted fecker too.
Anyone who hasnt seen Petes Steely Dan Tribute should head to a show for Stevie alone. The guy can do serious things with an acoustic.

We've managed to get a friend out of guitar 'retirement' for a new band. He missed the first couple of rehearsals (it's a 2 guitar band) and ummed and ahhed a bit but we got him in. First rehearsal with him he did a little fill and my face split into a massive grin. A very different player with a great sound, I wish I had some samples to share. 4 rehearsals in and he's loving it and is totally committed and spending money on kit :)

Eddie Tatton's a session player who hangs out here in Lincoln and he's one of the most expressive and tasteful guitarists I've come across - he just knows what/when to play!

He put a nice little solo on this track on my brother's band's latest EP (well technically it's the Viv Murrell Band, but my brother's been playing guitar for her for years from the start!) So Viv's on the clean Tele, my bro's on the clean-then-crunchy Strat, and Eddie's on the ES335-awesome-solo-duty after the 2nd chorus :)
My brother's a great player too imo, if you care to listen to the other EPs on the soundcloud ;)

(Oh and the Hurry Home EP and the Closer/Embers EP on Viv's Soundcloud also features Isaac Marshall on bass, 'Isaac' on here!)

Great voice that Viv! I'm not keen on the arrangements (not my particular flagon of char, that genre) but you're right that he's a very expressive player, really nice note choices, gave me a few shivers, as did the vocal. Romantic.

Although I`ve been in - and am currently in - bands with some very good guitarists, probably the one whose style I found best was a mate of mine, Neil. He`s one of those guitarists whose solos really lift a song, has a great understanding of how to use effects, and although he can "widdle-for England" is knowledgeable enough to know when not to play, or to just play one note. Sadly he`s one of those people that is always "looking for the right opportunity" so in other words, only plays at home, posting vids on youtube. Don`t stop huim from being darn good though!
