fender73 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 not technically a re-form without Mike Anthony though - shame people have to fall out etc. I'm sure Van Halen Jnr can cover MA's lines ok. Quote
arthurhenry Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Glad to see a mention of the lack of Michael Anthony - not a reunion without him. There seems to have been very little interest in WVH's bass playing. Not seen any features on him in bass mags. Quote
Clarky Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 3 out of 4 ain't bad! Besides Michael Anthony is entrenched in Chickenfoot now with Sammy Hagar (who could NEVER replace Dave Lee Roth as far as I am concerned) Quote

Clarky Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Nah. First two albums - and to a lesser degree Women and Children first - trounce all over Hagar-era Van Halen IMHO \nn/ Quote
Geddys nose Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I'm sure young Van Halen can play Mike's bass lines but his backing vocals are what made the VH sound IMO. If I had a chice between VH now and Chickenfoot I'd go for the latter. Quote
thisnameistaken Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Dave was always the talent IMO. So they're still gigging with that chubby kid on bass? Quote
arthurhenry Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Never liked W & C first, Fair warning is the best album, I think. Some great playing from all the band on VH II as well. Quote

Clarky Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Nothing tops their first album, in my view. Astonishing, original piece of melodic hard rock/metal. bencooper Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 On the Roth/Hagar thing. I think they are two very different front men who, because of their chemistry with Eddie, made two very different bands. Personally I prefer Hagar era Van Halen, with For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance being my favourite albums. The band were awesome with Dave or Sammy. I think what happened with Gary Cherone was nothing to do with him, he's a great singer arguably better than either Roth or Hagar technically speaking, but it wasn't the right fit. I really hope the new album they're planning is something special, otherwise it would crush my lifelong love affair with the band. Time will tell... Quote

Good old Dave. Ever the professional carrying on in tune despite the fact he must have known EVH was out of tune a probably pissed. Quote
Clarky72 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Love old VH, not overly taken with later Hagar VH, but I do love Chickenfoot. Off to see them next week! Quote
peteb Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 (edited) I think that Van Hagar were great but just not the same as the original Van Halen, who were my favourite band! Edited January 6, 2012 by peteb Quote
Yep, great backing singer, and a good bassist - no point being flashy if you`re playing with EVH or Satriani, just play the holding role - the whole band sounds better because of it. Quote

The laws of physics state it cannot be done. Quote
Clarky Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Eat em and Smile - what an album! Yankee Rose and Ladies Nite in Buffalo are superb - the chemistry between Vai, Sheehan, Bissonette and DLR is awesome Quote

M-N-Y Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 This is just woeful. They have done some great records, but you have to be able to cut it live and on this evidence they can't anymore. Eddie's guitar is miles out of tune and the solo is just bizarre. At least DLR can sing in tune. Quote

Doctor J Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I think I read the synth was set at 44.1kHz instead of 48kHz or vise-versa or something along those lines, twas a technical f*** up rather than the chaps being able to play the right notes on the guitar. Quote
