Ancient Mariner
Marcus Miller playing Purple Haze: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agRb-QJc7xY&feature=related Just seems basically wrong. I'd never question the man's abilities, just the appropriateness of 'covering' this song. Edited January 7, 2012 by Ancient Mariner
Oopsdabassist
Not my cup of meat, sorry.
EdwardHimself
surely he's allowed to cover it if he wants? Ok sure it's possibly not the best cover song I've heard, but at least they've put their own spin on it. Nice bass amp, too.
Conan
Actually, I quite like it!
M-N-Y
Perfectly okay by me. I don't feel any music is so precious that it can't be covered by another artist from a completely different musical genre. It wouldn't bother me if someone did a reggae version to be honest.Miles Davis covering Michael Jackson and Scritti Politti...who'd have thought it! Each to their own. Mr. Foxen
I expect this sort of thing from Flea. I like the way the guitarist is sort of rocking out for the solo but is kind of bad at it, like its a bit new to him. Rock seizure.
I've seen that guitarist before, he always does that and it always annoys me! Was expecting to hate this cover version but actually quite liked it. The Dark Lord
Not really keen on instrumentals. And anyway, it's not a song in that case.
gafbass02
You know what, it's one of those 'just because you could, doesn't mean you should!' moments.
Doctor J
That was horrible. Take some of the notes but none of the balls of the original, put it in cardigan and play it in a lift in a nursing home and that's what you get.
M-N-Y
The guitarist is Dean brown. He always looks rather strange when he plays. Great player though, he's been Marcus' guitarist for a few years. This video must be a few years old anyway as Don Alias is on percussion and he passed away in 2006.
Clarky
Awful - where's the energy and raw power of the original? Elevator music
Muzz
I managed 48 seconds. Self-indulgent crap.
SebCarr
That was really awful. I don't object to anyone covering anything - unless it sounds that bad!
Ancient Mariner
Interesting range of comments. I think Gaf covered my feelings best really. As a guitar player I thought the guitarist had an interesting slant on the solo - I bet Hendrix never played it note-for-note gig after gig either. chardbass
His covers are usually great- Frankenstein, Boogie On, Burnin Down The House etc. This one isn't one of his best- at least it allows him a funky solo in Em. Love that slightly broken sound he gets. Is it just me but every time I see Dean Brown play I think of Damon Hill??
