You come to a session with different people. You all choose the chords you want to work over. How would you carry on to improve your bassline, from roots 3rds 5ths octaves, somethings you studied randomly and such ?

what would you guys do ?

i pick up little things here and there from songs i learn, but probably just listen and see which notes sound good when played.

I like to take elements of other melody parts within the song, like following or echoing the vocal line in short passages.

Go with the groove and stay in key with lots of passing notes........

If the chord progression flows well, I like to play the changes if I can.
