Pull-off technique question

What's the best technique for getting a hard, short, pull-off (as heard in Luther Vandross's 'Never Too Much? I can't seem to deaden the note enough.
And you, Jones, at the back there - stop sniggering boy!

EDIT: And after all the innuendo, what I actually meant was the hammer-on pop towards the end of the phrase in the verse. :rolleyes:
