Pull-off technique question

What's the best technique for getting a hard, short, pull-off (as heard in Luther Vandross's 'Never Too Much? I can't seem to deaden the note enough.
And you, Jones, at the back there - stop sniggering boy!

EDIT: And after all the innuendo, what I actually meant was the hammer-on pop towards the end of the phrase in the verse.

Maybe try palm muting gently, while popping the note hard? If your pop technique is anything like mine, the side of your hand should come to rest quite naturally on the strings.
