thewalruswaspaul
Hi all, I have a Squier Bronco that I will be doing some upgrades on , the machineheads on this thing have to go though as they are complete crap and rattle and buzz whenever I play an open string. The problem is the machineheads on this bass are not the standard elephant ear tuners but are the much smaller type as in the picture below. I have yet to find any replacement machineheads that have the same dimensions , anyone know of any direct replacement tuners , any suggestions ? BassBod
Without seeing the back its hard to be sure, but I would think the Gotoh /Schaller M4 types would fit - its all down to shaft size (ooeeerr) and screw location (and again, ooeer). Might be worth looking at WD's dirt cheap section, or Brandoni (old Eko stuff might be good?). BB Edited April 3, 2008 by BassBod

neepheid
You could always ream out the holes to the required size for whatever machines you like. I did this with a Squier Affinity Chinese neck that used those 'orrible enclosed tuners but with cloverleaf buttons. Then I fitted some machines off a Fender MIM bass. Would give you a later Musicmaster kind of feel and would have the added advantage of covering up any cosmetic issues at the back due to the large baseplates they're mounted on For less hassle, take one of the machines off and remove the bushing from the headstock. Measure the diameter of the tuner shaft and the diameter of the hole in the headstock (without bushing). Then you'll hopefully be able to find something to fit. Using any of the small enclosed tuners (Gotoh GB7, Shaller M4 etc.) will likely leave you with screw holes showing - they're smaller than the cheap tat that's on your bass currently. The Burpster
Aha, nasty shabby cheapos the same as used on cheap Yamahas...... So anything will be an improvement, but you need to make sure you order 3/8" shaft tuners (unless you want a big job enlarging hole in teh headstock....). Whatever you do get you will have to plug teh holes left by removing these and drilll new holes for teh replacemnets. Maybe some of these---- Wilkinson Bass Tuners WJB650CR Chrome – £26.99 WJB650BK Black – £29.99 WJB650GD Gold – £32.99 Ultra smooth action with full size base plates. Vintage style tuning keys. 2+2. or anything on this page......
