KennysFord
Hi Folks, I'm the proud new owner of my first Fender P Bass and very happy I am with it too. I've noticed that if I have the volume set a full and the tone where I like it (probably about a third from the bottom) if I turn the volume down slightly I loose quite a bit of the midrange punch. The Bass has SD APB-1 pups. Is this normal or not. Thanks in advance, Pete.
skidder652003
thats weird i just asked a very similar question today! I would say its not normal for a spanking new P, however have you tried it with a different amp and/or speakers first?
KennysFord
Hi Bud, It does the same on my rig and practise set up. It's not a lot but it is noticeable. Anyone ??
Protium
Isn't this a problem that has something to do with how the Pots work and why some people fit a treble bleed kit?
My thoughts too
discreet
If it's a passive P the tone control cuts treble, it doesn't 'add' bass. So if you have the tone control anywhere else but full on you are losing signal, which is then exacerbated by turning the volume control down. I leave both controls at full on my P for maximum signal and use the amp or pre-amp EQ to modify the tone and vol. KennysFord
Cheers for that discreet. I understand it now.
Protium
You can mod it easily with a 100k resistor and a 1nF capacitor in parallel between the signal in and out on the volume potentiometer. This should give you a more even sound over the whole volume control
KennysFord
Cheers for that protium. I'll look into it.
Immo
I for one never use the vol knob on mine P-basses for other purposes than 'mute'. If I need to setup the volume of my playing, I use 'Preamp Level' (Gain) and 'Master Level' (Volume) on my amp.
