Gareth Hughes Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 F**KING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's what you call them. Just saw this posted over on Talkbass. Check it out and smile gratuitously http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC0FeLVsg7c&feature=g-all-fbc&context=G234290eFAAAAAAAAKAA Quote
geoffbassist Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Wow. I bet it was a nightmare finding your own gig bag after the show :-) Quote
Gareth Hughes Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 I think it's a very beautiful sound - yes, there's a few moments where a little fairy dust up top would be nice, but I'd happily sacrifice that in order to hear that smooth dark tone. Quote
Immo Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Answering the question stated in OP - ContraBand. Quote
jakenewmanbass Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Death of Ase from Peer Gynt, Greig.... lovely piece! Quote
sarah thomas Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Fairy dust? There was that triangle tinging away in Anitra's Dance... just the perfect sprinkling of fairy dust, methinks. Quote
fatback Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012
Answering the question stated in OP - ContraBand.
A Richter of basses? Quote
Gareth Hughes Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012
Fairy dust? There was that triangle tinging away in Anitra's Dance... just the perfect sprinkling of fairy dust, methinks.
Okay - we'll forgive the triangle for being there. Poor thing looks bored out of her skull - but then she does have the killer bass drum part at the end. Almost trumps the 90 basses..... Quote
sarah thomas Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Aye, the killer bass drum was wonderful. Is that the opposite of fairy dust? And what would the opposite of fairy dust be called? Keeping it decent, naturally. Troll boulders perhaps. Quote
Gareth Hughes Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 Opposite of fairy dust? I'm in favour of 'Shock & Awe'. Or (to rip off Henry Rollins) how about 'The First Four Black Sabbath albums'? As in - make that end section sound like the first four Black Sabbath albums. Then you'd know that anything less that sonic decimation would be faking it. Quote
BassBus Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 It's always interesting to hear how different people find an interpretation. That is one of my favourite orchestral pieces but I found it just sounded like mud. For me it needs the violins up top. Just my view though. Interesting take on it though. Really well played. Quote
sarah thomas Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 A set of decent headphones helps, but beyond that, yes, it's just subjective opinion. Quote
derrenleepoole Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 That sounded ace. I bet it was incredible being in the audience though. No Youtube compression to wobble the sound Quote
Gareth Hughes Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 (edited)
89 too many.
Bah humbug. Is that your inner guitard coming out? Edited January 24, 2012 by Gareth Hughes Quote
TPJ Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Interesting that most are playing with a German bow. Quote
Bilbo Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Can't help thinking of the sound of a Lancaster Bomber....... Quote
paul_5 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 No agreement then on the collective noun for double basses? a Behemoth perhaps? Quote
Gareth Hughes Posted January 25, 2012 Author Posted January 25, 2012 A horde? I do like a Behemoth tho - a Behemoth of Basses. Quote
grumble Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 A Ponder of Contrabasses ? Oh and check out the scroll on the third from the left on the frontline, I want that bass ! Would love to hear their interpretation of Barber's Adagio, with all that bass present it would probably be a recipe for mass suicides in the audience Quote
Bilbo Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I just hope they didn't all try to get there on public transport.... Can you imagine the queue at the bus stop? Quote
Gareth Hughes Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 Can you imagine all the cases lying out the back - or even worse: Flight Cases!?!?!?!??! Quote
