You can't buy the tone you're seeking..it's in the fingers/thumb/muting, etc..it will get to the point where you have a "sound" whatever Bass you're playing..

They are essentially the same as HighBeams, so are bright-ish.
The Bootzilla coated string are a little warmer as they are coated LowRiders.

I like BlackBeauties, nice all round string.

But, you can't beat flats for a good "vintage thump".

As others have and will undoubtedly say, tone is found through a myriad of places e.g. Tone controls, fingers/plectrum use and position, pickup selection, cabs, venue, ear wax, quality of wine drunk that night, hair length, alignment of planets, etc.

What do DR Black Beauties sound like? Can they peoduce a warm, fat vintage tone?

Any other coated strings to recommend?

You might want to check out this comprehensive review of DR strings by Ed Friedland comparing the various DR string types, including the Black Beauties, there are also sound samples of them all.

I've only used Elixir Nanoweb coated strings and quite liked them.

Rotosound 88 TruBass will give you the black color (quite permanent) and fat, vintage tone. But they're expensive and thick (65-115). You may try other tapewounds as well, I'm very pleased with Fender Nylon Tapewounds.

Thanks for that. Find it very usefull. I'm already user of DR orange neon. Love the sound, but coating wears off to quick and looks terrible. Think next I'll try LoRiders or Sunbeams

I've Sunbeams on my MIA Jazz. Sound and feel lovely. Not black or orange, though!

Great on a Precision. I get a nice 2 inch bit of silver showing on each string after about an hours playing but this doesnt seem to make them 'go off'. Curse of the plectrum :) . The coating stays on for ages elsewhere and they last about 4-5 times as long as the Rotosound RS66's I used to use.
Sometimes the G is a little less lively than I'd like. It seems to vary from set to set.
I would like to use some strings that are a little brighter (and cheaper) but I've got used to the look of black strings and bare metal ones look odd to me now.

Another fan here - well, a fan of how they feel and how they sound. But, again as reported, aggressive pick use and they soon wear through. Can be touched in with permanent marker pen, though.
