paul, the
Spied him on World Jazz on Mainstreet, Renaud Garcia-Fons is a French 5-string upright player of jazz and classical with preference to Flamenco, Asian and folklore music. Precious little videos available on youtube, but he caught my attention playing a flamenco pizzicato solo. He didn't seem to need to look at the fingerboard, either, which always astounds me. jakenewmanbass
He is a virtuoso no doubt. A friend lent me his dvd, I was very impressed but would not really go out of my way to put it on.
paul, the
All for one. I don't think I've ever been as motivated to acquire a bassist's solo material. As I said, I saw him on TV looking all humble, expecting him to give an example of a simple flamenco line, then BAM. I turned the volume up, stood up, and really got into the piece. Guest Jecklin
the beginning of the very textural motif at 1:40 to 1:50 is my favourite bit. Thanks for posting this up.

geoffbassist
i saw him live about 4 years ago, insane! really insane!
Kiwi
Looks like the action on his bass is pretty low, I haven't seen many players with that kind of set up. The 5 string sounds like a high C? [attachment=8611:Renaud_G...__action.jpg] There's barely a still shot in that entire video to try and keep things visually interesting. He must have had cameras swooping around him all day like king kong with biplanes. EDIT: Just saw a production shot included at the end of the clip - 1 camera on a boom swooping around! KennysFord
there's a piece on him in this months bass player magazine.........if that helps.
Oscar South
Yeah its a high C. I bought his CD/DVD Arcoluz a few months back, one of my favourate double bassists and his bass is beautiful.
Bilbo
Just got a listen to him on his website. Am loving it and just ordered a cd off Amazon (£5). I have, for a long time now, enjoyed neuvo flamenco so this is not new territory. But his is just a beautiful sound and it has got me wishing I could play that instrument (see previous posts about why I can't).
